The latest installment in the Scary Movie franchise, also called Scary Movie 6, became available to rent or buy digitally on July 21st. Within just one day, it climbed to become the fourth most popular movie on the Apple TV Store in the US (according to FlixPatrol). It’s also quickly gaining popularity on streaming platforms like Apple TV, Google, and Amazon worldwide. Since its theatrical release on June 3rd, Scary Movie 6 has already proven to be a financial success, and all digital rentals and purchases are now contributing to its profits.
Scary Movie Was Not Celebrated by Critics
I remember when Scary Movie first hit theaters – it absolutely exploded! It opened to a huge $55 million domestically, which was a record for the series at the time. Ultimately, it raked in over $230 million worldwide on just a $30 million budget. Now, critics weren’t exactly thrilled; Rotten Tomatoes gave it a pretty low 23% approval rating. But audiences? They disagreed! A whopping 64% of viewers liked it, and tons of five-star reviews from regular moviegoers clearly drove the film’s success despite what the critics said.
This is the sixth movie in the horror comedy series and brings back the Wayans family after a 20-year hiatus, following their last involvement with Scary Movie 2 in 2001. Marlon, Shawn, Keenen Ivory, and Craig Wayans co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Alvarez, and Michael Tiddes directed. Marlon and Shawn also returned to star as their characters Shorty and Ray, alongside returning favorites like Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, and Chris Elliott.
The Ghostface Killer Returns in Scary Movie
The new movie brings back Cindy Campbell (Faris) and her friends when a masked killer from the first Scary Movie returns. It’s packed with spoofs of horror films, especially those in the Scream series, and also pokes fun at recent hits like Smile, M3GAN, Sinners, Terrifier, The Substance, Wednesday, and Weapons. Classic horror movies such as Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre get parodied too.
Currently, there’s no official word about a Scary Movie 7. However, if the latest film continues to be popular on streaming services, the chances of it happening will definitely improve. The film’s performance will be a key factor in whether or not another installment is made.
