People often joke that some superheroine costumes are barely more than bathing suits. Marvel Comics playfully acknowledged this with a special swimsuit-themed comic. Now, they’re releasing another one, showcasing heroes from The Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man universes.
The first Marvel Swimsuit Special came out in 1991. It featured superhero photos and was designed as a humorous take on the popular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The magazine included fake ads, like one for Death Con Roach Spray featuring The Punisher and another for Ozone Sunglasses promoted by The Watcher. Marvel released three more similar specials between 1992 and 1995.
The popular Marvel Swimsuit Special returned in 2025, and two more followed. These weren’t just pin-up collections; each included a story. The first, ‘Friends Foes and Rivals,’ featured heroes creating their own magazine to compete with a fake one made by the Roxxon Corporation. The second, ‘Marvel Winter Break Special,’ saw the heroes repeat this strategy to reveal Roxxon’s plot to harm the Savage Land.
Who will appear in the 2026 Marvel Swimsuit Special?
Alright, Marvel just gave us a peek at the covers for their 2026 Swimsuit Special, and it’s… a lot. The main cover is a wraparound from J. Scott Campbell, and it’s basically the entire Spider-Man crew having a beach day – Peter, MJ, Gwen, Silk, Miles, Spider-Woman, even Aunt May! And get this, Venom’s there too, looking surprisingly chill. They also dropped a variant cover by John Romita Jr. featuring the powerhouse women of the Avengers – Wasp, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, and Black Widow. It’s a fun look, though I’m still processing the whole concept, honestly.

As a huge comic book fan, I’m really excited about the 2026 Marvel Swimsuit Special! It’s doing something a little different this year – instead of one big story, it’s going to be an anthology, meaning it’ll have several shorter comics all tied together. They’re calling it “Brand New Beach Day,” and each of the four stories will focus on a different family of Marvel heroes enjoying a summer adventure. It sounds like a fun way to see some of our favorite characters in a more relaxed setting.

- Spider-Man starts in a slasher-horror story set during a beach vacation, written by Avengers Academy author Anthony Oliveria
