It was a tough year for fans of The Batman with a recent unfortunate announcement for 2025, but new information should renew their enthusiasm for the future of Matt Reeves’ Batman saga. While several live-action Batman films have been made, I think The Batman is second only to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which is arguably DC’s best movie.
Many people are eagerly anticipating the story of The Batman 2, hoping it will be as good as, or even better than, the first film in the DC Elseworlds series. While 2025 wasn’t a great year for fans of The Batman, things are looking promising for the future.
The Batman 2 Was Set To Arrive In 2025
I was so excited for The Batman 2 to come out in 2025, but it’s been a real disappointment to learn it’s been pushed back. Originally, it was scheduled for October 3, 2025, which felt so close! But then the release date moved to 2026, and now it won’t be here until October 1, 2027. That means we’re waiting a full five years after the first The Batman to see what happens next, and honestly, that feels like a long time!
Fans were understandably frustrated by the delay, especially because a big part of the appeal of The Batman was seeing Robert Pattinson as a relatively new Batman. By the time the sequel comes out, Pattinson will be 41, which he’s even joked about. The script took longer than expected due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and some personal challenges for director Matt Reeves.

Although 2025 wasn’t a smooth year for The Batman 2, a recent announcement has renewed my enthusiasm for the film. Colin Farrell, who plays The Penguin, discussed the sequel on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He’s read the script and believes it’s “a masterwork.” Considering Farrell recently received awards for his performance as The Penguin, that’s high praise.
I’ve been hearing some exciting things about where Robert Pattinson’s Batman is headed, straight from Colin Farrell himself! He’s hinted that Pattinson has a really compelling arc planned for the character, a journey he thinks audiences will truly enjoy. And considering Farrell was part of both The Batman and the Penguin spin-off – both fantastic films, in my opinion – his enthusiasm for the Batman 2 script is a really promising sign. It sounds like we’re in for something special.
DC Fans Will Have Plenty Of Batman Projects To Make Up For The Batman 2’s Delay
The sequel to The Batman is taking longer to come out than expected, but it looks like it will be worth the wait. Luckily, fans of Batman have plenty of other Gotham City stories coming out in various forms to enjoy until then.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe will introduce the villain Clayface in a movie next year, which will also give us a look at the DCU’s version of Gotham City. For animation fans, a new take on the Bat-Family will arrive on November 10th with the Bat-Fam series. Plus, a four-part Batman: Knightfall movie series is planned, starting in 2026. So, there’s a lot of Batman content on the way before The Batman 2 is released.
