The end of the year is typically a great time for movie releases, and this year is shaping up to be the same. Following a very successful Thanksgiving weekend with Zootopia 2 quickly approaching $1 billion in earnings, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash is set to premiere on December 19th and is expected to dominate ticket sales for the rest of the year and into January. However, other films will have a chance to shine, and three new movies will be released on Christmas Day to offer audiences some alternatives.
With a strong promotional push, you’ve probably heard of at least one of Timothée Chalamet’s new films: Marty Supreme, an A24 movie about table tennis that’s making him a frontrunner for Best Actor. He also stars in Anaconda, a clever reimagining of the 1997 film with Jack Black and Paul Rudd, and Song Sung Blue, a musical biopic about a Neil Diamond impersonator. While Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson are hoping for awards attention for the latter, early indicators suggest the box office competition between these three movies is already decided.
Survey Data Suggests Anaconda Is The Clear Christmas Day Leader
Early audience surveys from Greenlight Analytics’ TheQuorum suggest that Anaconda is a clear frontrunner to become the second most popular movie after Avatar. It’s performing significantly better than its competitors in terms of awareness and interest.
I’ve been following the latest surveys, and I’m really intrigued by the numbers for these two studios! It looks like Marty Supreme has been recognized by 21% of the 2000 people surveyed, with 34% saying they’re interested in what they’re offering. Song Sung Blue is doing even better so far, with 30% awareness and 32% interest. Thankfully, both studios still have a couple of weeks to ramp up their marketing, and I’m hoping to see those numbers climb even higher! It’s going to be interesting to watch how things develop.
While 54% of people are aware of Sony’s upcoming film Anaconda, 50% express interest in seeing it. This puts Anaconda in sixth place for awareness and fourth for interest out of 72 movies with current survey data. In comparison, Avatar: Fire & Ash leads with 73% awareness and 54% interest (second only to Toy Story 5). Though Sony doesn’t seem to be heavily promoting the film, their current marketing efforts are clearly working.
I’ve been following the buzz around the new Christmas movies, and the numbers are really interesting. Beyond just general interest, a recent survey by TheQuorum asked people if they’d actually go to a theater to see these films, or watch them at home. It’s a big deal, because most movies didn’t score above 50% – only Toy Story 5 did! Avatar 3 was close with 49%, but Marty Supreme only got 28%, Song Sung Blue 27%, and even Anaconda was at 41%. What’s really standing out is that not only are more people talking about this particular movie, but a lot more people are saying they’d choose to see it on the big screen this Christmas. It’s a really positive sign!
These early numbers don’t give us the whole picture, and these movies still have a chance to gain momentum. However, it wouldn’t be shocking if Anaconda performs very close to Avatar: Fire & Ash in terms of opening weekend box office revenue.
