As a huge Batman fan, I’m really excited about the new show coming in 2025, and it feels like exactly what DC needs right now. It reminds me how important Batman: The Animated Series was – it wasn’t just a fantastic show, but it really set the standard and influenced everything DC did with Batman for years after!
As a huge animation fan, I’ve always thought the way Batman: The Animated Series handled characters like Harley Quinn and Mr. Freeze was brilliant – it really shaped how they’re seen even today. And you can see that impact on every Batman cartoon that’s come after it. It’s exciting to see the upcoming Batman show planned for 2025 seems to be learning from that legacy. It’s a good reminder that there’s always space to try new things with Batman, especially in animation, and the 90s series proved that perfectly.
2025’s Next Batman Show Is A Reminder That DC’s Next Era Would Benefit From A Range Of Animated Series
Compared to previous animated Batman series like Batman: The Animated Series, DC’s newest show, Bat-Family, is quite different. It shifts the focus from Batman himself to his extended family of heroes, and it features a lighter, more playful style and look than fans might expect.
Interestingly, the willingness to try new things with Bat-Family is what arguably connects it to Batman: The Animated Series. Just like Batman: The Animated Series was a bit of a gamble when it first came out – before it became the classic show everyone remembers – Bat-Family also breaks from what’s currently popular in animation.
This new series, which follows up on the Merry Little Batman movie, is especially exciting. It reminds us of what Batman: The Animated Series showed years ago: Batman’s rich history allows for many different versions of the character to thrive, particularly in animation. This is true even though recent Batman projects have generally been darker in tone.
Recent Batman adaptations, such as The Batman and Batman: Caped Crusader, have been fantastic. However, many of these newer releases share a fairly serious and dark mood. This isn’t necessarily a flaw, but it does create an opportunity for shows like Bat-Family to try something different and explore new creative directions.
DC Has The Perfect Opportunity To Lean Into The Untapped Potential Of Its Animated Releases
Despite the enduring popularity and critical acclaim of Batman: The Animated Series, subsequent Batman animated projects haven’t consistently received the same level of funding or recognition.
It’s easy to see why movie studios have prioritized live-action films – they’re usually more popular with audiences and make more money. However, this focus has overlooked the potential success of animated projects, something the Spider-Verse movies recently demonstrated, and which Batman: The Animated Series hinted at years ago.
It’s great to see new shows like Batman: Caped Crusader and Bat-Family. They suggest DC is exploring more stories within Batman’s world, and finally giving this often-overlooked corner of the DC universe the recognition it deserves, especially after Batman: The Animated Series showed how much potential it had.
