2 Marvel Box Office Bombs Are Now Surprise Streaming Hits

Despite recent struggles in theaters, two Marvel movies that initially flopped at the box office are now finding success as they’ve become popular on Netflix. While Marvel films haven’t been performing well in cinemas lately – whether from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe or Sony’s Spider-Man films – there’s some good news for these franchises thanks to streaming.

Both Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter, despite not performing well in theaters, landed among the top five most-watched movies on Netflix. Nielsen data, as reported by Bloomberg, shows Madame Web was the most-watched movie on Netflix in 2025, with Kraven the Hunter coming in fifth.

I was really surprised to hear this, especially considering how badly both Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter did in theaters this year. Madame Web barely made over $100 million despite costing between $80 and $100 million to make. And Kraven the Hunter, with a budget of $110 to $130 million, only brought in $62 million. It’s pretty shocking they’re getting any attention now, given those numbers.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in Kraven the Hunter as the main character, a hunter seeking revenge after being rigorously trained by his father. Separately, Madame Web features Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a New York City paramedic who develops the ability to see the future and must safeguard three young women. Both movies are now available to stream on Netflix.

The Future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

After the disappointing performance of Kraven the Hunter, Sony is shifting away from building its own live-action Spider-Man Universe. Instead, the studio will concentrate on its collaborations with Marvel Studios, including the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day starring Tom Holland, scheduled for release in July 2026.

Despite recent setbacks, Sony has exciting projects on the horizon, including Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for release on June 18, 2027. This film will pick up right where Across the Spider-Verse left off, continuing Miles Morales’ story as he faces a version of himself from another universe—one who has become the Prowler—while trying to return home and protect his loved ones.

Sony plans to keep its Spider-Man movies available on streaming platforms like Netflix, hoping they’ll continue to attract viewers despite a lot of competition. How well these movies perform on streaming could affect what Sony decides to do with future Spider-Man films, especially since some of their recent Spider-Man-related movies haven’t been very successful.
