2 Major Agatha Christie Films Hit Prime Video

December is off to a great start for Agatha Christie fans! As of December 1st, two movie adaptations directed by Kenneth Branagh are now available.

As a huge Agatha Christie fan, I was excited to see both Death on the Nile (2022) and A Haunting in Venice (2023) finally hit Prime Video. While they didn’t do so well in theaters, I think anyone who loves her stories will still want to check these adaptations out.

Following the success of Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile adapts Agatha Christie’s 1937 novel of the same name. Kenneth Branagh directed and produced the film, with additional production from Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh, and Judy Hofflund. While the movie earned $130.2 million at the box office on a $90 million budget – meaning it didn’t make a profit – it received positive reviews, earning an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie centers around the famous detective Hercule Poirot (played by Branagh) as he enjoys a Nile River vacation that’s interrupted by a murder investigation—the victim being a wealthy young woman. The cast includes Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Tom Bateman, and Annette Bening.

Kenneth Branagh returns as Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice, the third film in the series. Starring Tina Fey and Michelle Yeoh, the movie is inspired by Agatha Christie’s 1969 novel, Hallowe’en Party, though it’s not a direct adaptation.

I was really disappointed to see A Haunting in Venice didn’t do well in theaters, especially since it scored pretty high with both critics and audiences – around 76%! It only made about $113.7 million worldwide, even though it cost around $60 million to make. I loved seeing Poirot back in action, this time investigating a murder during a Halloween seance in post-war Venice. It had a great atmosphere and I was hoping it would be a bigger hit!

The Future of the Hercule Poirot Franchise

The film A Haunting in Venice concluded with a hint at potential future movies featuring Hercule Poirot. While neither Kenneth Branagh nor 20th Century Studios has officially confirmed a sequel, James Prichard, Agatha Christie’s great-grandson, has suggested that more films are a possibility.

To keep making these movies, we need to avoid repeating ourselves,” Prichard explained to GamesRadar+. “If Ken Branagh and screenwriter Michael Green are interested in continuing the series, we’re definitely open to it. There’s still plenty of source material available, so we won’t run out of ideas,” he added.

Death on the Nile and A Haunting in Venice are both streaming on Prime Video.
