19 Years After Its Finale, Everwood Finally Has A Perfect Replacement

After nearly two decades since it ended, the beloved show Everwood finally has a worthy follow-up. While shows like Game of Thrones paved the way for larger budgets and longer breaks between seasons, HBO Max’s The Pitt is charting a fresh direction for television.

After the unexpected hit of The Pitt, HBO is looking to create more shows following a similar model. They’re aiming for series with at least 15 episodes each season, produced on a reasonable budget, and released with a new season annually.

I’m really excited about the new shows HBO Max is developing! They’ve ordered pilots for two totally different series. One is a police drama called American Blue, but I’m especially looking forward to How to Survive Without Me – it’s a family drama that reminds me so much of Everwood, one of my all-time favorite shows from the early 2000s. I think it’s going to be a perfect follow-up!

HBO Max’s Upcoming Show How To Survive Without Me Is Everwood’s Spiritual Successor

I’m really intrigued by this new series, How to Survive Without Me. It’s produced by Greg Berlanti, and from what I understand, it centers around a family – adult siblings and their dad – dealing with a major loss in Los Angeles. It seems like they’ve lost their mother, though the show doesn’t spell it out directly. It’s going to be a deep dive into how people cope with grief and try to rebuild their lives after something devastating happens.

You might recognize this storyline – the TV show Everwood, starring Emily VanCamp and Chris Pratt, had a similar premise. However, Everwood took place in a small town, while this story is set in the city. In Everwood, a doctor named Andy Brown relocates his family to Everwood, Colorado, following his wife’s death. The show follows the family as they cope with their loss and rebuild their lives.

How To Survive Without Me Brings Greg Berlanti’s Career Full Circle

As a big fan of TV, it’s always interesting to see where creators started. I recently learned that Everwood was actually Greg Berlanti’s very first show! Looking at his career now – he’s the mind behind the huge Arrowverse and movies like Fly Me to the Moon and Love, Simon – it’s incredible to see how far he’s come. Apparently, he’s circling back to what made him start with a new show called How to Survive Without Me, and it sounds like it has a similar feel to Everwood. It’s cool to see him revisit that kind of storytelling.

The children in Everwood were quite young, but twenty years later, How to Survive Without Me focuses on adult children. This shift in age may not have been planned, but it’s a lovely way to show how the characters from Everwood have grown up and could now be similar in age to the group in How to Survive Without Me.

What Is The Status Of HBO Max’s How To Survive Without Me?

The new series, How to Survive Without Me, is still in its early stages of production, having been announced just a month ago. The script was written by Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran, who also developed the story with Brian Rodgers. All three will serve as executive producers, alongside Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions.
