As a huge sci-fi fan, I remember being really excited when Battlestar Galactica finally wrapped up in 2009. It was a truly special show, though its history was a bit of a rollercoaster. Originally, it premiered way back in 1978, created by Glen A. Larson, and it quickly built a dedicated fanbase. Sadly, it was pretty expensive to make, and ratings dipped after a while, leading to its cancellation after just two seasons. Still, it left a lasting impression!

Even so, the television network did meet with Larson and agreed to revive the show with a new version called Galactica. This new series premiered in 1980, a year after the original was cancelled. However, despite a promising start with its first episode, ratings quickly dropped, and it wasn’t able to recapture its previous success. As a result, it was cancelled after only 10 episodes.

Despite its initial cancellation, the original show was very popular with its fans and had a lot of promise. This led to a successful revival of Battlestar Galactica in 2004, though Richard Hatch wasn’t directly involved beyond receiving a credit as a consultant. The new series featured many of the original actors and ran for four amazing seasons, ultimately concluding the story.

Caprica, on the other hand, was a much larger prequel with 19 episodes, expanding the Battlestar Galactica story.

I was really pleased to see the story didn’t end with the original series! It kept going in all sorts of cool ways, like through comic books, and even a web series called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It was great to have more of that universe to dive into.

Why Battlestar Galactica Was Such A Major Success For The Sci-Fi Genre

What makes Battlestar Galactica so captivating is its focus on realistic, complex characters and their stories. Unlike many science fiction series, the show featured a core group of characters who appeared throughout its entire run, from the original 1978 series to the 2009 conclusion.

Having plenty of time and resources allowed us to really connect with the characters and become invested in their stories. While the show definitely had exciting sci-fi features like spaceships, robots, and galaxy-spanning conflicts, it offered more substance and depth than many other shows in the genre.

The show needed a clear ending because the actors who made it so special couldn’t have continued with it. While the finale wasn’t universally loved, it was a fitting conclusion that solidifies Battlestar Galactica‘s place as a truly great science fiction series.
