With the holidays right around the corner, I’m already planning my movie marathon! And you won’t believe what just popped up on HBO Max – one of Tyler Perry’s films that critics really didn’t love when it first came out, but has somehow become a total cult classic. Now, Perry’s become a big name on Netflix with a ton of original movies and shows – things like Ruth & Boaz, Beauty in Black, Straw, The Six Triple Eight, Tyler Perry’s Duplicity, and Tyler Perry’s Divorce in Black – he’s been very busy the last couple of years! But it’s actually a funny movie from one of his older, beloved comedy series that’s getting a new life on HBO Max, and I’m definitely adding it to my list.
You can now stream A Madea Christmas on HBO Max. Tyler Perry not only stars as the hilarious Madea in the film, but he also wrote and directed it. The Madea series is known for its over-the-top plots – think Madea Goes to Jail and Madea’s Witness Protection – and A Madea Christmas adds a festive, holiday twist to the character’s usual antics. Originally a stage play Perry performed and released on DVD in 2011, the story was later developed into a full movie in 2013. Here’s what the movie is about:
Madea joins her niece, Eileen, on a trip to the small town of Buck Tussel to surprise Eileen’s daughter, Lacey, who isn’t coming home for Christmas. Lacey has been avoiding her critical mother because she secretly married her college classmate, Connor, who is white. When Eileen and Madea arrive, Lacey pretends Connor is just a farmhand, but her deception quickly gets out of hand.
Look, I’ll be honest, critics haven’t always loved Tyler Perry’s work, and A Madea Christmas was no different – it got pretty harsh reviews. But honestly, the critics don’t really get it! The real fans, like me, loved it. That’s why the audience score is so much higher – around 70%! We know what we like, and Madea always delivers for us.
A Brief History of Madea’s Strange Adventures

Lionsgate
Similar to A Madea Christmas, the character of Madea actually started as a stage performer. She first appeared in Tyler Perry’s 2000 play, I Can Do Bad All by Myself, and later went on to star in a number of films.
Tyler Perry first introduced the character of Madea in the 2005 film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. He’s played her in 12 movies over the last twenty years. His most recent Madea film, Madea’s Destination Wedding, came out in July 2025 and went straight to Netflix. But even fans didn’t seem to enjoy this one, giving it a low audience score of 36% and a very poor critics’ score of just 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.
