Many sitcoms don’t stay popular for long, but Schitt’s Creek is likely to be remembered as one of the greats. While plenty of good sitcoms capture the feel of the 2010s, Schitt’s Creek stands out because it remained consistently funny and well-written throughout its six seasons.
The most memorable sitcoms aren’t just funny – they also have heartfelt moments, and can even be surprisingly sad despite being known for being light and cheerful. Schitt’s Creek excels at this, blending warmth and emotional honesty while consistently offering viewers genuinely sweet and unexpected turns. What’s also unique about the show is that it avoids creating truly unlikeable characters, and this approach is remarkably effective.
What Is Schitt’s Creek About?
CBC
After losing all their money due to a dishonest business manager, the wealthy Rose family is left with only one possession: the small town of Schitt’s Creek. Now, Johnny and Moira, along with their pampered children, David and Alexis, must adjust to a much simpler life, leading to plenty of funny moments.
While the Rose family is central to Schitt’s Creek, some of the show’s strongest episodes highlight characters like the witty but vulnerable Stevie and the aptly named Roland Schitt. The show is full of quirky, lovable characters, and though it playfully mocks the Roses’ struggle with their changed circumstances, it always maintains a kindhearted tone.
Schitt’s Creek Is Aging Better Than Many Other Sitcoms
While technology and fashion often clearly date sitcoms, Schitt’s Creek avoids this by taking place in a small town with limited shopping options. Most characters wear practical, everyday clothes, though Moira, David, and Alexis are known for their more dramatic and unique styles. This contrast in clothing choices not only defines the characters but also helps the show feel relevant across different time periods.
Sitcoms often become strongly associated with the time they were made, which can be a blessing or a curse. The most memorable ones evoke warm feelings of nostalgia, but others haven’t held up well and are difficult for today’s viewers to enjoy. Humor based on stereotypes or making fun of marginalized groups rarely ages well, but the show Schitt’s Creek successfully avoids these pitfalls.
The show actively avoids relying on stereotypes, and a perfect example of this is when Patrick and David become an official couple. When Johnny mistakenly tells Patrick’s parents about their relationship, they’re initially taken aback. Viewers might expect this to be due to prejudice, but it’s revealed they were simply surprised Patrick hadn’t shared his feelings with them himself.
Why Schitt’s Creek Is Perfect For Binging
As a critic, I have to say that while Schitt’s Creek has some truly outstanding individual episodes, what really struck me was how effortlessly watchable the whole series is. With seasons clocking in at around 13 or 14 episodes, and each one lasting just about 22 minutes, it’s perfect for a relaxed afternoon binge. Honestly, it’s a rare sitcom where I felt like every single episode hit the mark – a consistently funny and heartwarming show from start to finish.
Four out of six seasons of Schitt’s Creek have received perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes, and the show as a whole boasts a fantastic 93% rating. Beyond the critical acclaim, Schitt’s Creek is a heartwarming story about finding belonging and purpose, no matter where life takes you. It’s a truly special sitcom that everyone should experience at least once.
