Several large-scale science fiction movies are planned for release in 2026 and beyond, including titles like Project Hail Mary and new Avengers films. These movies, all with budgets of $150 million or more, could be major box office hits, making 2026 a significant year for the genre.
I’m really excited about some of the upcoming movies – things like Avengers: Doomsday and the new Spider-Man are almost guaranteed to be huge. But honestly, I’m a little less certain about others, like Project Hail Mary and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. While I like those franchises, it’s hard to predict if they’ll be massive successes or something of a surprise – they could really go either way.
Every Upcoming Sci-fi Movie That Has a $150M+ Budget
The Mandalorian and Grogu – $144 Million

There’s a lot of excitement building for The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, as it’s the first Star Wars film to be released in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. With Pedro Pascal leading the cast, many believe the movie’s performance will be crucial for the future of Star Wars films.
I just read this amazing report from the Bespin Bulletin – apparently, Disney and Lucasfilm only spent $144.3 million making The Mandalorian and Grogu! Can you believe that? It makes it the least expensive Star Wars movie they’ve made since Disney took over. That’s pretty incredible when you think about all the special effects and everything!
The budget for the 2026 Star Wars movie is lower than those of large-scale films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($447 million) and The Rise of Skywalker ($490 million). This makes sense, as the story being told in The Mandalorian and Grogu isn’t as expansive as in those previous films.
The relatively small budget is a smart move, considering previous expensive films didn’t do well in theaters. However, there’s still a risk – if their ambitious, *Avengers: Endgamestyle team-up movie flops, the whole project could be scrapped.
Project Hail Mary – $150 Million

The movie version of Andy Weir’s popular novel, Project Hail Mary, is estimated to have cost $150 million to make, according to Variety.
The reported budget seems reasonable considering how much the movie relies on computer-generated imagery and visual effects, especially since a significant portion takes place in space. It puts Project Hail Mary in the same budget range as other successful blockbusters like Dune: Part One ($165 million) and Blade Runner 2049 (around $150-$185 million).
With a budget of $150 million, Project Hail Mary has a reasonable financial starting point to potentially earn a profit. However, its success will largely depend on positive reviews and strong audience reactions, especially during its first weekend in theaters.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – $150 Million

Later this year, the world of The Hunger Games is coming back to theaters with the new movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. This film is a prequel that takes place in District 12 and focuses on the 50th Hunger Games.
According to Deadline, the new Hunger Games movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, cost $150 million to make. This is a significant investment, similar to the budgets of the previous films Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, which cost around $140 million and $160 million respectively.
Lionsgate is very optimistic about the box office potential of Sunrise on the Reaping, especially given the success of its previous film, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. That earlier movie earned $337 million globally on a $100 million budget in 2023, and it also received positive feedback from both fans and critics.
Masters of the Universe – $170 Million

The new Masters of the Universe movie from Amazon MGM Studios is coming out on June 5, 2026. The first trailer gives fans a look at the characters, story, and impressive visuals.
According to Variety, the movie Masters of the Universe cost $170 million to make. Amazon MGM Studios is counting on it to be a big hit.
The movie’s large budget is largely because of its extensive visual effects, including epic space battles and He-Man’s iconic transformations. With Jared Leto, Nicholas Galitzine, and Idris Elba already cast, the film is a significant investment. However, the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the first trailer suggests it could be a box office success.
Supergirl – $200 Million *

A December 2025 Forbes article reported that the upcoming Supergirl movie, starring Milly Alcock, has a $200 million budget. While that figure seems reasonable considering the film’s large scope and fantastical elements, DC Studios head James Gunn has stated the report is inaccurate, leaving the true budget unknown.
Because the new Supergirl movie is often compared to Guardians of the Galaxy, its budget is likely between $150 and $170 million. Considering Guardians of the Galaxy cost around $170 million to make, that’s probably a more accurate estimate for the upcoming DC film.
At $170 million, the estimated cost seems relatively low, especially considering the movie Superman cost around $225 million to make, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day

We still haven’t seen a trailer for the new Spider-Man movie, and its budget hasn’t been revealed yet.
With a huge cast and a complex storyline involving the multiverse, it’s no surprise that Spider-Man: No Way Home cost $200 million to make. Spider-Man: Homecoming also had a significant budget of $175 million, making it the most expensive film in the trilogy despite being the first one released. The presence of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man likely contributed to this cost, as did the need for a lot of visual effects to create the action sequences and Spider-Man’s web-slinging.
Despite featuring lots of visual effects for Mysterio and being filmed on location in Europe, Spider-Man: Far From Home had the lowest budget of the three films at $160 million.
As a big fan, I’ve noticed the series is moving towards more realistic, down-to-earth stories now, so I figured the next movie’s budget might be a bit smaller than the huge ones we’ve seen before. But, I’m hearing rumors it could actually be around $200 million – the same as No Way Home! Apparently, that’s because Tom Holland’s getting a bigger paycheck, they’re using a ton of visual effects for Hulk, plus they’ve got a massive cast and are planning some seriously epic action, like a full-blown prison break.
Dune: Part 3

The first two Dune films were huge successes in theaters. Dune: Part One made $433 million globally, even with the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Dune: Part Two earned over $715 million worldwide.
The first Dune movie, released in 2021, cost $165 million to produce. However, the sequel’s budget increased to a remarkable $190 million, making it the most costly film ever directed by Denis Villeneuve and a significant moment for the Dune franchise.
Although the official budget for Dune: Part Three hasn’t been revealed, estimates suggest it will likely fall between $200 and $210 million. This increase is probably due to rising costs from inflation, higher pay for the actors, and changes in tax incentives.
Avengers: Doomsday

Expectations are very high for the new Avengers movie, Doomsday, given all the excitement and its impressive cast of both familiar and new Marvel characters. While the exact cost of making the film isn’t public yet, estimates suggest a budget between $400 and $600 million. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly earning around $80 million for his roles in both Doomsday and the upcoming Secret Wars movie.
With a massive scale and a cast of huge stars, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the most costly movies ever made, potentially exceeding the $356 million budget of its previous installment, Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel Studios is clearly investing heavily in Doomsday, and they likely expect it to be a massive box office success, potentially earning over $1 billion – or even $2 billion – thanks to the intense excitement surrounding the film.
Man Of Tomorrow

I’m really excited about the new Superman movie! It feels like a direct continuation of James Gunn’s first one, and from what I’ve heard, the budget is around $225 million – the same as the previous film. It sounds like they’re aiming for something just as epic!
I haven’t heard many details about the next movie yet, but it seems likely the budget will be around the same as the first one. DC Studios is really focusing on keeping costs down for sequels, so that makes sense to me.
A reasonable budget for Man of Tomorrow would likely fall between $200 and $225 million. However, the final cost will depend on how many characters return and the amount of visual effects needed for the main villain, Brainiac.
Avengers: Secret Wars

Currently, production hasn’t started on Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to come out in December 2027. Because of this, the final budget for the movie is still unknown, though it’s expected to be very large.
Both Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War were incredibly expensive to make. Endgame cost about $356 million, and Infinity War cost somewhere between $350 and $400 million, largely because of the large number of actors in the films.
As a huge fan, I’m hearing that the next big Marvel movie, Secret Wars, is going to be absolutely massive – and expensive! Rumors are flying around that, considering the scale of the story and all the different versions of characters they’re planning to include, it could cost anywhere from $500 to $650 million to make. That’s a huge investment, but if it delivers on the promise of the Doomsday storyline and the epic Battleworld plot, I think it’ll be worth every penny!
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

The new MonsterVerse film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is currently in production and is expected to have a similar budget to previous installments like Godzilla and Kong.
I was really impressed with how well Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire did! It seems like the filmmakers were smart with the budget, coming in at $135 million, and it really paid off at the box office. It’s interesting to compare that to the previous films – Godzilla vs. Kong cost between $155 and $200 million, and King of Monsters unfortunately didn’t do as well, only making $390 million on a $185 million budget. It’s great to see the MonsterVerse finding its stride!
Both Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla were expensive to make, but ultimately very profitable. Kong: Skull Island cost $185 million and earned $569 million in 2017, while Godzilla (released in 2014) had a $160 million budget and grossed $529 million at the box office.
Considering how well New Empire performed, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova likely has a budget somewhere between $135 and $150 million, and will probably stay under $200 million.
