10 TV Shows We Thought Would Be The Next Sopranos

Often considered one of the most important TV shows ever created, The Sopranos still stands out. The series, which aired from 1999 to 2007, centered on Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini) – a mob boss – and his family, exploring the challenges of balancing his criminal life with his personal and family issues. Even almost 20 years after it ended, The Sopranos remains unique and hasn’t been equaled.

Since The Sopranos aired in 2007, many other TV shows have tried to capture its unique mix of thrilling action and heartfelt emotion, but none have quite succeeded. While there are several series exploring similar themes of crime families and personal struggles, The Sopranos remains groundbreaking. Though it’s impossible to replicate, a few shows have come close to matching its impact.

Godfather of Harlem

A Crime Boss Tries To Surpass The New York Mafia

I’m really into Godfather of Harlem – it reminds me a bit of The Sopranos, but it’s totally unique. It’s a fascinating period piece set in 1960s New York, and it’s based on true stories. The show follows Bumpy Johnson, played by Forest Whitaker, as he tries to take back control of Harlem after being under the thumb of the Italian mafia for a long time. It’s a powerful story about reclaiming your community.

While the crime drama draws inspiration from real people like Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, Godfather of Harlem isn’t afraid to change things around to make a compelling story—for example, the show gives Forest Whitaker’s character a more developed and emotionally resonant arc. Though season 5 hasn’t been officially announced, the series is well-deserving of a continuation.

Boardwalk Empire

A Dissection Of Political Corruption In The Prohibition Era

If you enjoy crime dramas based on real stories, check out Boardwalk Empire. The show centers on Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi, who is inspired by the historical figure Enoch L. Johnson. Nucky is the treasurer of Atlantic City during the Prohibition era, but his growing power and secret ties to the mob put his public life and reputation at risk.

HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is a truly excellent historical drama, though it’s quite different from The Sopranos. Both shows are fantastic, but they offer very different experiences. The Sopranos had a generally melancholic tone, while Boardwalk Empire often presents violence and immorality in a more excessive way—which is effective, but in a different manner.

Top Boy

A Young Man Is Stuck In London’s Gang Violence

Though a British crime show like Top Boy and The Sopranos might seem very different, they surprisingly explore similar ideas. Both series portray a sense of despair and the feeling that the main characters are destined for tragic outcomes due to their criminal lifestyles. The drug networks in Top Boy, for example, operate in ways that are comparable to the mafia depicted in The Sopranos.

Despite any comparisons, Top Boy feels much more like The Wire than The Sopranos. Although drug-related gang violence is central to the story, it doesn’t quite align with the core themes of The Sopranos. Still, those who enjoy The Sopranos will probably appreciate Top Boy for its realistic portrayal of life, authentic dialogue, and memorable music.

Tulsa King

A Disgraced Capo Builds A New Crime Syndicate In Oklahoma

While Tony Soprano was a powerful mob boss in The Sopranos, the new Paramount+ series Tulsa King flips the script on traditional mafia stories. Sylvester Stallone plays Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a former key player in the Italian-American mafia who is exiled to Oklahoma after serving a 25-year prison sentence.

In Tulsa, Manfredi needs to create a new criminal organization, recruiting people from all walks of life – like a taxi driver and a dispensary owner. This unlikely group unexpectedly becomes a close-knit family, but Manfredi’s troubled past continues to haunt him. As his unconventional mafia rises, they quickly attract dangerous enemies.

Animal Kingdom

The Misadventures Of A Criminal Dynasty

I’ve always been fascinated by family dynamics in shows like The Sopranos, but Animal Kingdom really digs into that concept. It’s not just about blood relation—the Cody family, operating out of California, feels like a whole different level of closeness, even in their criminal world. While the show definitely has its share of thrilling heists and intense moments, what really keeps me hooked is the incredible cast of characters and how they all interact.

The strongest episodes of Animal Kingdom skillfully combine thrilling action with the complex dynamics between its characters. These episodes delve into the backstory of the family’s powerful matriarch, Janine “Smurf” Cody, and explore the factors that turned Andrew “Pope” Cody into a ruthless criminal. While similar to shows like The Sopranos, Animal Kingdom distinguishes itself with a noticeable undercurrent of revenge, which can be both compelling and unsettling.

MobLand

A Streets-Smart Fixer Stands Between Two Competing Crime Families

In the gritty streets of London, two powerful criminal families are locked in a fierce struggle for control, willing to do whatever it takes to win. At the center of it all is Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), a complex character who tries to maintain order, but the rival gangs will resort to murder to achieve total dominance.

What’s so compelling about MobLand is that it doesn’t have any clear-cut good guys. While Harry is the most sympathetic character, he’s motivated by obligation rather than genuine loyalty. Plus, the powerful Harrigan family members are ruthlessly ambitious and would readily betray even their own relatives to maintain control and prevent the Stevensons from gaining power.

Sons of Anarchy

A Biker Gang Wreaks Havoc On A Californian Town

Most people probably have a limited idea of what constitutes a “mob,” but a biker gang like SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original) definitely fits the description. Starting with the original nine members featured in Sons of Anarchy, the club grows into a powerful organization involved in illegal activities like gun running, corrupting politicians, and typical gang warfare.

Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, shares some striking similarities with Tony Soprano, particularly when you consider how his personal struggles often mirror the dangerous activities of his motorcycle club, SAMCRO. However, Sons of Anarchy ultimately carved out its own unique identity, appealing to a different audience than The Sopranos. Instead of being a successor, it feels like a surprising, yet complementary, show.

Peaky Blinders

A Critically-Acclaimed Period Piece With Endless Action

When Peaky Blinders first came out, no one knew it would become such a huge hit, lasting six seasons and inspiring a follow-up movie. The show is a crime drama set after World War I, and it centers on the Peaky Blinders gang, led by Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy). The series follows their efforts to grow their power across Britain while maintaining control of their home turf in Birmingham.

Critical Response To Peaky Blinders
Season Rotten Tomatoes Score
Season 1 88%
Season 2 100%
Season 3 100%
Season 4 89%
Season 5 86%
Season 6 100%
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (2026 Film) 90%

Initially, fans of The Sopranos were drawn to Peaky Blinders because of its blend of criminal activity and complex family relationships. However, as the series progressed, Peaky Blinders developed its own unique identity and became much more than just a show inspired by The Sopranos. While some connections still exist for those looking for them, Peaky Blinders has definitively become a show in its own right.

Gomorrah

A Real Look At Italy’s Criminal Underbelly

While The Sopranos became a defining show for Italian-Americans in New Jersey, Gomorrah is set in Italy itself, depicting the real-life Camorra crime organization instead of the American mafia. The series centers around a conflict between a new generation and established leaders, sparked by the arrest of the Savastano family’s boss and the resulting fight for control.

While two very different characters compete for the throne, a surprising third player is secretly pulling the strings. Gomorrah is an almost flawless crime drama that deserves a wider audience, though those hoping for a show like The Sopranos might find it lacks the same New Jersey style.

Lilyhammer

Steven Van Zandt’s Second Most Popular Crime Drama

Even though it was Netflix’s very first original show, Lilyhammer is now largely forgotten. However, many fans of The Sopranos were eager to watch it, hoping it would be a similar show, as Steven Van Zandt starred in both.

Steven Van Zandt is known for playing Silvio Dante, a close friend and advisor to Tony Soprano in The Sopranos. He later starred as Frank Tagliano in Lilyhammer, a former high-ranking member of the New York mafia. However, this familiar role unfortunately made it difficult for Lilyhammer to stand out from its predecessor, as it was constantly compared to the hugely popular The Sopranos. It’s hard for any show to measure up to an original like that.
