RPGs have thrived on many consoles, but the Super Nintendo stands out as the best. It’s home to legendary titles like Chrono Trigger and EarthBound, which players still rave about today.
While many classic SNES RPGs are fondly remembered, a lot of great ones have been largely forgotten. These include games that were only released in Japan, like The Magical Land of Wozz, and others that simply didn’t get much attention at the time, despite being high quality.
I recently checked out this old JRPG called The Magical Land of Wozz – it was originally released in Japan as Chou-Mahou Tairiku Wozz back in ’95. Red Company developed it, and Bullet-Proof Software published it. Basically, the game takes place in this world called Wozz, and it’s getting wrecked by this super bad demon lord named Balam. He’s sending all sorts of monsters to cause trouble for everyone who lives there.
Despite being a magical adventure, The Magical Land of Wozz delivers surprisingly fast-paced action. With challenging battles and a detailed crafting system, it offers plenty to do and should keep players engaged for hours.
Live A Live is a role-playing game (JRPG) created by Square. What makes it unique, especially when it first came out, is that it’s different from many of Square’s other RPGs. Instead of a single, ongoing story, the game is made up of several separate stories, and players experience the game through the eyes of different characters in various time periods.
Each of the seven chapters in Live A Live tells a unique story with its own characters and world, all connected to the game’s overall plot. This makes it feel different and more innovative than many other Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). While a recent remake on the Nintendo Switch has brought more attention to the game, it remains a hidden gem for many players.
Robotrek is a role-playing game (JRPG) created by Quintet, the team behind beloved SNES titles like ActRaiser and Terranigma. The game takes place on Quintenix, a planet that builds robots, and is now facing a dangerous hacking threat.
At first glance, Robotrek seems like a standard JRPG with traditional turn-based combat. However, what makes it special is its robot customization feature. Because you can modify these robots to be more or less powerful, Robotrek remains interesting and engaging longer than many other games from that time.
Soul Blazer is an action role-playing game where a powerful god, the Master, sends the hero to Earth. The player must defeat the many monsters that are infesting the world – it’s a challenging task, as enemies are everywhere!
In Soul Blazer, you play as a hero freeing the souls trapped by monsters. This not only brings life back to the world, but also makes the game easier as you progress. This creates a really captivating cycle of gameplay, and…
Terranigma is an action role-playing game where you play as Ark, who has the incredible task of rebuilding the world after its destruction. He must bring life back to the planet while battling enemies along the way.
Similar to Soul Blazer, Terranigma focuses heavily on rebuilding the world, challenging players to help restore Earth to its former glory. However, it’s not just about restoration – players will also battle enemies trying to plunge the world into darkness.
Mystic Ark is a role-playing game (JRPG) created by Produce!, the team behind the classic game The 7th Saga. The story unfolds on a strange island where players choose to play as either Remeer or Ferris, uncovering its hidden mysteries. It doesn’t take long to realize the island holds secrets deeper than they initially seem.
As the name suggests, Mystic Ark isn’t as flashy as many classic JRPGs. While you’ll still fight battles often to level up, combat offers more than just experience points. By fighting, you can actually learn new spells and abilities, which are key to making your characters stronger and smarter – a unique feature of the game.
Emerald Dragon is a role-playing game for the Super Nintendo, created by Alfa System and published by MediaWorks. The game takes place in a world where dragons and humans live together. The story follows Atorushan, a dragon who travels to the human world to save a friend from his past.
Unlike many traditional Japanese role-playing games, Emerald Dragon doesn’t level up your character, Atorushan, through experience points. Instead, you become stronger by finding emeralds, which let him transform into a powerful dragon. This transformation boosts his attacks and offers a unique and rewarding way to progress through the game.
Chaos Seed is an action role-playing game created by Neverland and released by Taito. The game takes place in a world that’s slowly fading away, with plants and animals dying off. But players have the power to bring life back to the world and restore it to its former beauty.
Chaos Seed is unique because it combines fast-paced action RPG combat with the relaxing elements of a simulation game. Players use a Feng Shui-inspired system to design rooms that help them battle enemies, creating an interesting mix of intense action and cozy building. It’s a great choice for those who enjoy classic RPGs and simulation games alike.
G.O.D.: Heed the Call to Awaken, also called Growth or Devolution, is a role-playing game (JRPG) created by Imagineer. Set in 2009, the game takes place a decade after an alien invasion nearly destroyed Earth. The main character, Gen, is a survivor who must now prevent a second invasion.
Unlike many other Japanese role-playing games, G.O.D.: Heed the Call to Awaken presents a more intense and challenging experience. Players control Gen, who must master and expand his psychic abilities by defeating powerful bosses. This, along with a detailed job system, creates a deep and engaging game that demands as much from players as it does from the main character.
Treasure Hunter G is a strategy-based role-playing game created by Sting and released by Square. The game centers around three friends who are racing against time – and a villainous Dark King – to locate a treasure chest brimming with riches.
While the story isn’t overly complex, Treasure Hunter G delivers a fun and engaging experience through its gameplay. You can choose to explore and find hidden treasures, or focus on fighting enemies – it’s a simple RPG that’s easy to pick up and play.
