10 Most Powerful Dragon Pokémon, Ranked By Stats

When kids first encounter Dragon-type Pokémon in a game, they usually expect them to be powerful, and they often are! These Pokémon typically have high stats, and many of the most powerful Legendary Pokémon are Dragon-types. They’re also quite durable, resisting many different attack types and only being truly vulnerable to Ice and other Dragon-type moves.

Dragon-type Pokémon were once a dominant force in competitive battles, but the introduction of Fairy-type Pokémon weakened them. Even so, Dragon-types remain very strong, and skilled players can still use them to quickly defeat opponents.

Mega Garchomp Is One of the Strongest Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon

It’s easy to see why Cynthia’s Garchomp is so popular – making it even stronger with a stat boost and a Mega Evolution creates a truly powerful Pokémon. Mega Garchomp boasts a massive 700 base stat total, putting it among the strongest Pokémon numerically. However, its true strength lies in how frequently it’s actually used in battles.

Mega Garchomp is incredibly powerful, boasting a huge 170 Attack stat. Its Sand Force ability further strengthens its Ground, Rock, and Steel-type attacks, allowing it to easily overwhelm opponents with moves like Earthquake.

While Mega Garchomp is fun for regular games, it wasn’t as popular in competitive battles as the standard Garchomp, even when both were allowed. Mega Garchomp gains attack power but loses speed, which usually makes it less effective. Regular Garchomp can maintain its speed and use items like Choice Scarf to boost it even further.

Kyurem Black Isn’t As Strong As Its Counterpart

Kyurem Black is created when Kyurem fuses with Zekrom. Unlike other forms, it focuses on strong physical attacks instead of special ones. It boasts an impressive base Attack stat of 170, matching Mega Garchomp, and is even a little faster.

It also has the Teravolt ability, which allows it to bypass certain defensive abilities, similar to Mold Breaker. Plus, it learns Fusion Bolt, a very powerful Electric-type move, even though it doesn’t receive a Same-type attack bonus when using it.

Although both Black and White Kyurem have similar moves, White Kyurem is generally preferred by players. This is because White Kyurem has a significantly higher Special Attack stat, making it more effective in battle. While Black Kyurem has had some success in official competitions, it doesn’t offer the same versatility as its counterpart.

Mega Latias Is a Bulky Dragon-Type Pokémon

Okay, as a fan, I have to say Mega Latias is so good because it’s incredibly bulky. Seriously, with a base Special Defense of 150, it can take a ton of special hits. Plus, if you give it Calm Mind, it quickly becomes almost impossible to take down! And it’s not just about defense – it can really help the whole team with moves like Light Screen and Reflect. It’s a fantastic Pokémon all around.

Mega Latias has a unique Dragon/Psychic combination and the ability Levitate, giving it strong defenses against seven different types of attacks. This makes it excellent at enduring battles and staying in the fight. When it attacks, it’s incredibly powerful with a high Special Attack stat, and its Speed is boosted by Tailwind, making it a fast and formidable opponent.

Mega Latias proved to be a successful competitive Pokémon in 2018 during the Sun & Moon series, giving it a better track record than many others. Both Latias and its Mega Evolution are also quite popular among players.

Kyurem White Deserves to Be a Box Legendary

Kyurem White excels with the moves shared across Kyurem forms because of its naturally higher Special Attack stat. In VGC 2025 Regulation I, players commonly equipped Kyurem White with strong Special Attacks like Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Fusion Flare, and Draco Meteor, which it utilizes to greater effect than other Kyurem forms.

This is a reliable choice when significant firepower is required, and it offers excellent protection. It’s easy to see why its symbolic figures are so strong.

Mega Salamence Is a Balanced Dragon-Type Pokémon

As a fan, I’ve always loved Mega Salamence! It’s just a powerhouse with great stats all around – seriously strong Attack and Defense are its best features. Speed and Special Attack are pretty equal too, which is awesome. But what really makes it stand out is its ability, Aerilate. It changes any Normal-type move into a Flying-type one, and not only that, it boosts the move’s power! That means moves like Double-Edge can hit super hard, getting that extra Flying-type damage bonus. It’s a really fun and powerful Pokémon to use!

After Mega Pokémon were no longer available, Salamence gained access to the move Body Slam. This is a useful option for players who prefer to avoid the self-damage caused by Double-Edge. It’s exciting to see Salamence return in Legends: Z-A, and its reappearance is a welcome addition to the game.

Mega Latios Is a Dragon-Type Pokémon With Powerful Psychic-Type Moves

Mega Latios completes the group of top-tier Pokémon, but it’s unique because it was too powerful for competitive play and was quickly banned. Similar to its standard form, Mega Latios prioritizes strong attacks over defense, unlike Mega Latias.

Latios is a powerful attacker with a Special Attack stat of 160, and its Speed of 110 allows it to move before many other Pokémon. It also has a unique advantage: it’s the only Pokémon that can use Luster Purge, a strong Psychic-type attack that has a 50% chance to weaken the opponent’s Special Defense.

Mega Latios can quickly defeat even very defensive Pokémon, and it shares a similar resistance to attacks as Mega Latias. If you need to overcome a Pokémon that heavily defends against special attacks, Psyshock allows Mega Latios to use its strong special attack power to hit the opponent where they are physically weakest.

Zygarde Complete Forme Was Powerful Before Legends: Z-A

You can only use Zygarde’s Complete Forme if another of its forms, which has the Power Construct ability, is reduced to less than half health. This form is incredibly durable with a base HP of 216, and it has special moves that allow it to strongly counter opponents.

Core Enforcer hinders opponents who move first. Thousand Waves stops them from switching to a different Pokémon. And Thousand Arrows is effective against Flying-types, and can even make Pokémon that usually float or fly vulnerable to Ground-type attacks.

Ultra Necrozma Is Powerful When Players Can Use It

Similar to Complete Forme Zygarde, Ultra Necrozma is a very strong Pokémon, but it can be difficult to get its full power going during a battle. It has equally high Attack and Special Attack stats—both at 167—so it can be built to excel in either area. However, most trainers prefer to focus on Special Attack to get the most out of its available moves.

Ultra Necrozma is a bit unusual because it gains the Dragon type, but doesn’t have many moves that take advantage of that strength. When Z-Crystals were available, players often equipped Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma with the Ultranecrozmium-Z item, which meant Ultra Necrozma was frequently used in battles.

Mega Rayquaza Is the Most Broken Mega Pokémon

Mega Rayquaza is unique because it doesn’t require a Mega Stone, allowing players to equip it with other items for extra benefits alongside its increased stats. Its ability, Delta Stream, also provides a significant edge by canceling out weather effects and eliminating the Flying-type weakness to Ice, which previously made it extremely vulnerable.

Mega Rayquaza boasts impressive stats, with both its Attack and Special Attack reaching 180. While it can be built for special attacks, many players prefer to use physical moves like Dragon Ascent and Extreme Speed, making a physical attacker the more common strategy. Regardless of how it’s built, Mega Rayquaza is an incredibly strong Pokémon capable of dealing massive damage.

Eternamax Eternatus Is the Strongest Dragon-Type Pokémon

Eternamax Eternatus boasts the highest base stat total of any Pokémon, not just Dragon-types – it’s the strongest Pokémon overall as of Generation 9. However, players can’t actually obtain it through normal gameplay.

Eternamax Eternatus is different from Ultra Necrozma in that it only appears during a specific battle in the climax of Pokémon Sword & Shield. Players aren’t required to battle it solo, and they receive assistance from Zacian and Zamazenta, whose attacks are particularly effective against Max Pokémon.

Although Eternamax Eternatus boasts incredible stats, they’re mostly there to make its battle challenging. Without them, the fight would be too easy. Despite this, Eternamax Eternatus is a great example of a powerful boss Pokémon, and hopefully we’ll see more like it with similarly impressive stats in future games.
