For decades, DC has captivated audiences with iconic characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash, all born from a spirit of imagination. Though most stories unfold within a single, consistent timeline, these characters often find themselves transported to different realities and alternate universes.
DC Comics has a history of teaming up its most famous heroes and villains with characters from other comic book publishers, like Image, Dark Horse, and IDW. These collaborations, ranging from graphic novels in the 1990s to much-anticipated crossovers, are considered some of the best standalone stories DC has ever created.
JLA vs Predator Put DC’s Greatest Heroes to the Test
Few characters from outside the DC universe have teamed up with Batman as successfully as the Predator. Since the original 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, these alien hunters have faced off against a wide range of heroes, including characters from Archie Comics and Judge Dredd.
I remember when DC and the creators, John Ostrander and Graham Nolan, really blew my mind back in 2001 with JLA vs Predator! It was amazing seeing the entire Justice League go up against the Predators – those guys are seriously considered one of the toughest warrior species out there, and it was a real challenge for our heroes. It felt like the DC Universe was truly tested!
Inspired by Mark Waid’s classic “Tower of Babel,” this story successfully appealed to fans of both series with its non-stop action. It’s a sci-fi adventure reminiscent of Green Lantern, perfectly showcasing the Justice League’s cleverness and how well they work together as a team.
Superman vs Aliens II Brought the Xenomorphs to Apokolips
Superman teamed up with the creatures from the Alien movies in a fantastic storyline. While the first installment was good, it doesn’t compare to the second, called “Godwar.” This story features Darkseid creating xenomorphs to strengthen his army and fight against New Genesis.
Okay, so things are looking really bad for the New Gods, and they’re desperately turning to Superman for help! As a fan, I’m so excited about Superman vs Aliens – it leans heavily into that hard sci-fi vibe of the DC Universe, and honestly, the idea of Superman going up against one of the most terrifying creatures ever imagined is just brilliant!
This story feels like a grand, space-spanning adventure similar to Jack Kirby’s classic New Gods, but with a scary, science fiction twist. And for fans of both franchises, seeing Superman and Orion team up to fight aliens is a real treat.
Batman vs Predator Shows How Resourceful The Dark Knight Is
As a huge comic book fan, I always think back to the 90s as a time when heroes and villains really went at it. And honestly, one of the coolest crossovers was definitely Batman vs Predator! It just made sense that when this alien hunter, a Yautja, showed up in Gotham looking for a challenge, it would lead straight to Batman. The Dark Knight was always the perfect prey!
Following a series of intense clashes, the creature finally arrives at the Batcave, setting the stage for a final showdown to resolve their conflict. Readers experienced three thrilling Batman versus Predator battles, each more spectacular and destructive than the previous one.
The story built Bruce Wayne up as a truly terrifying and challenging target, constantly showcasing his cleverness as he evaded his pursuer. It moved away from typical superhero tropes, focusing instead on the intense human-versus-monster conflict that made the earlier films so successful.
Batman/Judge Dredd: The Ultimate Riddle Was a Suprisingly Great Partnership
Starting in the 1990s, Batman began teaming up with Judge Dredd, with stories sending him to Mega-City One and bringing the lawman to Gotham City. Their most famous adventure is likely The Ultimate Riddle, which details how the pair were captured by a new, enigmatic supervillain.
He forces them to fight for their lives in a deadly competition against relentless enemies, including aliens and cyborgs. The Ultimate Riddle delivers a particularly intense and violent story for both Batman and Judge Dredd fans.
The story throws Batman and Judge Dredd into conflicts with one dangerous villain after another, highlighting their dynamic. Batman disapproves of Dredd’s extreme methods, while Dredd scorns Batman’s approach to justice. Despite these disagreements, they form a truly exceptional team in this crossover comic.
Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Captured ’80s Magic
Batman has a long tradition of exciting team-ups, and writer James Tynion IV paid tribute to that in his 2015 comic book series. The story begins when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arrive in Gotham City, tracking the Foot Clan who are working with Ra’s al Ghul. This leads to an unlikely alliance between Batman and the Turtles as they work together to defeat their shared enemies.
The Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series was a fantastic team-up for DC, capturing the feel of classic 1980s comics. The story followed the heroes as they fought through Gotham City, ultimately leading to a huge showdown with mutated enemies inside Arkham Asylum. It successfully blended the style of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with the world of Batman.
JLA/Avengers Was An Incredible DC/Marvel Crossover
Between the 1970s and 1990s, Marvel and DC Comics occasionally combined their universes, culminating in the massive team-up event, JLA/Avengers. The story kicks off with Krona, a banished Guardian of the Universe, traveling between universes and wiping them out. He eventually meets the Grandmaster, a powerful being from the Marvel universe, and they make a bet to decide the fate of everything.
The JLA/Avengers comic was a dream come true for fans, years in the making between Marvel and DC. It delivered exactly what people wanted, offering fun team-ups like Batman and Captain America, and showing how each team reacted to the other’s world. It’s a real treat for comic book enthusiasts.
Uncanny X-Men/New Teen Titans Is One of the Best Comic Book Crossovers Ever
The team-up events from DC and Marvel reached a peak with a crossover between the popular X-Men and the New Teen Titans. The story centers on Darkseid, who tries to unleash the power of the Dark Phoenix in order to overcome a powerful barrier known as the Source Wall.
After the X-Men and Teen Titans attempted to stop him, they found themselves fighting to escape his forces. Their team-up in Uncanny X-Men/New Teen Titans is now considered one of the best crossover events in comic book history, demonstrating a strong connection between the two groups. It remains highly regarded to this day.
Incredible Hulk vs Superman Answered a Classic Comic Book Question
Back in 1999, DC and Marvel teamed up to finally answer a big question comic fans had been arguing for years: Who would win in a fight, Superman or the Incredible Hulk? The story centers on Superman trying to stop the Hulk from destroying things, which catches the attention of Superman’s enemy, Lex Luthor.
The comic book battle between the Incredible Hulk and Superman was a legendary clash of titans that continues to captivate fans. Its artwork deliberately evokes the feel of comics from the early Silver Age, making it a classic “what if?” story and a perfect example of how to capture the style of older comics.
Wonder Woman/Conan Is a Match Made in Heaven
Wonder Woman is DC Comics’ most iconic warrior, drawing strength from her connections to Greek myths and the powerful Amazonian culture. In 2017, a creative team including Gail Simone, Aaron Lopresti, and Matt Ryan brought her together with Conan the Barbarian in a crossover that now feels like a perfect pairing.
Once unexpectedly thrown into gladiatorial combat together, Wonder Woman and Conan embarked on a thrilling journey through a savage, ancient world. They faced danger at every turn, battling pirates, powerful sorcerers, and ruthless raiders. The unlikely duo worked so well together that it’s surprising DC Comics hadn’t paired them up sooner.
Diana has been writing dark fantasy for a long time, and her recent work with Conan shows she truly excels at sword and sorcery stories. Gail Simone’s story created one of the best Conan tales of the 2010s, carefully developing the connection between two of the most iconic warriors in comics.
Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong Is a Comic Book Blockbuster
Over the past decade, Legendary’s Monsterverse has become a hugely successful series of blockbuster films, bringing Godzilla and King Kong together for American audiences. Inspired by fan requests, DC Comics followed suit, creating an epic showdown of its own with the ‘Justice’ storyline.
When giant monsters known as Kaiju appeared in the DC Universe, the Justice League had to rise to the challenge and protect Earth from a powerful King of Monsters determined to defeat Superman. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong was created specifically for fans, and it delivered an incredibly exciting and memorable battle, becoming one of the biggest comic events of the 2020s.
This action-packed series, and its follow-up, really showcases the Justice League at their finest. Building on the popularity of the Monsterverse, the crossover between Justice League, Godzilla, and Kong exceeded expectations and delighted fans of both DC and giant monster movies.
