A follow-up to the 2023 hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming soon, and it will feature a much larger cast of characters. The new film will introduce popular characters like Rosalina, some lesser-known faces like Mouser, and even guests from other Nintendo games, including Fox McCloud from Star Fox.
While the recent films have introduced some characters from the vast world of Mario, they’ve only begun to explore its many possibilities. There are still tons of memorable characters – both villains and helpers – from the Mushroom Kingdom and other areas that haven’t appeared on screen yet, and many of them would be great additions to future Mario movies from Illumination.
Wario Is One of the Mario Series’ Most Versatile Characters
Wario first appeared as the villain in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and has become a popular character in the Mario series. He was originally created as a sort of evil counterpart to Mario – his name is a combination of “Mario” and the Japanese word warui, which means “bad.” But over time, Wario has developed his own personality and has even become the star of his own games.
Wario started as a clear villain, famously stealing Mario’s castle when Mario was busy on an adventure. However, more recent games have shown him as a playful rival, or even a hero who helps out despite himself. Because of this, the writers at Illumination could fit Wario into almost any role in a future Mario movie and still feel true to his character for fans of the games.
Waluigi Deserves a Chance to Shine On the Big Screen
If a villain mirroring Mario appears in a future game, it makes sense for Luigi to have one too. Waluigi was created for the first Mario Tennis game as Wario’s doubles partner. Despite appearing in several spin-off games, he’s never been in a main Mario adventure. Surprisingly, this has actually made him very popular with fans, who root for him as a long-overlooked character deserving of a chance to shine.
Although Waluigi probably won’t ever get his own video game or be a fighter in Super Smash Bros., he’d be a great comedic partner for Wario in a movie. Plus, because the internet loves making memes about Waluigi, including him could generate a lot of free, viral publicity – similar to how it helped .
Daisy Would Complete the Mario Series’ Princess Trio
Now that Peach has been featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Rosalina in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the only significant princess missing from the films is Daisy. When she first appeared in Super Mario Land, Daisy was initially quite similar to Peach, but she later evolved into a character with her own unique personality. Unlike Peach, who is known as a gentle and graceful princess, Daisy is more athletic and full of energy.
The Mario games frequently hint at a romance between Daisy and Luigi, and adding her to the movies could give the spotlight to Luigi. Plus, viewers have already noticed clues about Daisy in the trailers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, suggesting she’ll likely appear in future films from Illumination.
Toadette Could Fill Out the Ranks of Peach’s Followers
The movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie featured many Toads, Peach’s devoted followers, but only one played a significant part. Adding a new Toad character would enrich the film’s world. While several Toads have names in the Mario universe, Toadette would be the best choice.
I was so excited when Toadette finally became a playable character in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe after first appearing in Mario Kart: Double Dash! And the Super Crown thing? Brilliant! Seeing her transform into Peachette, who looks so much like Peach, was a really cool addition. Honestly, I’d love to see that play out in the movies. Imagine Toadette disguising herself as Peach to throw Bowser off – that would be an amazing way to protect the princess and add some real suspense!
Professor E. Gadd’s Inventions Have Strong Narrative Potential
Besides plumbers and princesses, regular humans aren’t common in the world of Mario, making characters like Professor E. Gadd quite unique. This quirky scientist not only invented the Poltergust – the ghost-trapping vacuum Luigi uses – but also created F.L.U.D.D., the robotic device from Super Mario Sunshine.
E. Gadd is a fun character, but his inventions are what would really shine in a Mario movie. His crazy gadgets could provide both laughs and help move the story forward. Imagine a future film where Mario and friends have to find a crucial part for one of E. Gadd’s devices – a device that’s the only thing that can stop the villain’s plan.
The Koopalings Would Be Perfect Film Villains
Following Bowser and his son, are the Koopalings—Larry, Morton, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, Lemmy, and Ludwig. Originally presented as Bowser’s children, this backstory was later changed. Regardless of their relationship to Bowser, they consistently act as his loyal helpers and appear as major bosses in several Mario games, beginning with Super Mario Bros. 3.
This group of villains is more interesting than past single antagonists like Bowser and Bowser Jr. While the Koopalings are well-known, the games haven’t really let their individual personalities shine – each one is usually known for just one thing. A movie could give them a chance to develop as characters, and potentially change how they’re shown in future games.
Nabbit Would Play to Illumination’s Strengths
Nabbit is a newer character in the Mario games, first appearing in New Super Mario Bros. U. He started as an enemy, but later became a playable character in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. He’s often considered an easier character to play because he can’t be hurt by most attacks. The games haven’t shared much about Nabbit’s backstory or personality, giving filmmakers a lot of freedom to create their own version of the character.
Illumination, the studio that made the Super Mario movies, could easily bring Nabbit to life. He’d be a perfect, playful troublemaker who keeps Mario and Luigi on their toes while they deal with a bigger problem. The Mario films have been leaning on familiar elements so far, but with the franchise still popular, it would be great for fans to see a character from a newer game appear in a movie.
Petey Piranha Is a Memorable Monster
Piranha Plants are recurring enemies in the Mario games and have even been playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, they didn’t have a significant part in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. To feature them more prominently in future movies, introducing a well-known Piranha Plant character like Petey Piranha would be a great idea.
Petey first appeared as a boss in Super Mario Sunshine. He’s a huge, mutated Piranha Plant that can breathe fire. Despite being a simple character, he’s become a fan favorite and has shown up in several other games. In a movie, Petey could act as a strong enforcer for a weaker villain, providing a tough challenge for the heroes before they face the main bad guy.
Lakitu Was a Glaring Omission From The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The recent Super Mario Bros. Movie drew inspiration from the entire history of the Super Mario franchise, but it especially highlighted the look and characters of the very first Super Mario Bros. game. That’s why it was a bit surprising that Lakitu, a long-standing enemy in the series, didn’t make an appearance. Lakitu is a Koopa character who flies above the action on a cloud, often dropping obstacles onto Mario and his companions.
Originally just an opponent in earlier games, the creators of the new movie saw Lakitu as a way to show players how the camera works. While they could have simply made Lakitu one of Bowser’s minions, it would be a fun nod to the Super Mario 64 game if the movie acknowledged Lakitu as the one operating the camera, breaking the fourth wall.
Tatanga Would Be an Unexpected Surprise For Mario Fans
The trailers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie featured a boss character who hasn’t appeared much since Super Mario Bros. 2. The studio, Illumination, might keep bringing back overlooked Mario villains, and Tatanga—the purple alien who kidnapped Princess Daisy in Super Mario Land—could be next.
Unlike most villains in the Mario series who are connected to Bowser, Tatanga would feel fresh and different in a movie. Because The Super Mario Galaxy Movie takes place largely in space, he could be introduced briefly—perhaps in a hidden detail or after the credits roll. And if Princess Daisy appears in future films, Tatanga would be a fitting villain, considering their shared backstory.
