10 Key MCU Disney+ Storylines To Recall Before Avengers: Doomsday

The next big Avengers movie, currently titled Avengers: Doomsday, is coming, and here’s a refresher on what happened in the Marvel shows on Disney+ to get you prepared. While the movie isn’t out until December 18, 2026, rumors suggest the first trailer might be shown with the 2025 film Avatar: Fire and Ash.

This would finally give Marvel fans a proper preview of the new movie after so much anticipation. While the Marvel films coming out in 2025 heavily influenced the story of Avengers: Doomsday, expect to see connections to earlier movies as well.

If you’ve only been following the Marvel movies recently, you might have first learned some of the story details and character backgrounds in the Marvel shows on Disney+. Because of this, there’s quite a bit of information viewers should be aware of before seeing Avengers: Doomsday and possibly its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars.

Monica Rambeau Gained Light-Based Powers Linked To Captain Marvel

Let’s start with WandaVision, the first Marvel show on Disney+, which came out in 2021. The show centered on Wanda and Vision, but featured many other important characters as well. One of these was Monica Rambeau, the daughter of Maria Rambeau, a friend of Captain Marvel. In WandaVision, Monica worked for SWORD and was sent to investigate the strange magical reality created by Wanda Maximoff.

Monica later developed the ability to manipulate light, which became a key element in the 2023 Marvel movie, The Marvels. At the end of the film, she used these powers to fix a tear in the multiverse, unexpectedly transporting her to a universe containing older, well-known versions of the X-Men – the same characters expected to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.

Sam Wilson Became The Avengers’ Official Leader As Captain America

I was so excited when Sam Wilson finally became Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! The show, which came out in 2021, really dove into his feelings about Steve Rogers choosing him to carry on the legacy, and it was a powerful journey watching him come to terms with it. It was cool to see this story again in Captain America: Brave New World too, but this show was where it all officially happened.

Sam Wilson struggled with confidence and the historical mistreatment of Black men in America, including the story of Isaiah Bradley, a previous Captain America. Ultimately, he accepted his role and became the new Captain America, stepping up as the leader of the Avengers, a journey that will be shown in Avengers: Doomsday.

Loki Met A Kang The Conqueror Variant, He Who Remains

Following The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki was the next TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, Loki was particularly significant because it hinted at plot points intended for the movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, that movie has since been retitled Avengers: Doomsday after Marvel decided to move away from the Kang Dynasty storyline following allegations of assault against Jonathan Majors.

Even though the story of Kang won’t be fully wrapped up beforehand, it’s possible we’ll see it resolved during Avengers: Doomsday. Because of this, let’s quickly review some key events from the Loki series.

The series Loki featured a Kang variant called He Who Remains, who explained that a massive Multiversal War was brewing between different versions of himself. To prevent this war and the chaos his other variants would cause, He Who Remains artificially created a single, stable timeline – the Sacred Timeline – which is where all the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies and shows have taken place, effectively limiting the growth of a full multiverse.

A Loki Variant Named Sylvie Cracked Open The Multiverse

Sylvie, a version of Loki, resented He Who Remains and his organization, the Time Variance Authority (TVA). The TVA routinely eliminated alternate timelines to prevent the growth of the multiverse and stop different versions of Kang from appearing. One of the timelines they destroyed was Sylvie’s own.

Driven by a desire for revenge, Sylvie killed He Who Remains. This act unleashed the MCU multiverse, allowing it to expand without any limits. We’ve already seen the effects of this in other Marvel movies and shows, and it will be a central conflict in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie might finally address the storyline of Kang the Conqueror, though it’s still uncertain if it will. Regardless, Loki’s role in creating the multiverse will definitely be a key element of the film.

Hawkeye Passed On His Mantle To Kate Bishop

The Disney+ show Hawkeye had a more subtle effect on the MCU. It was a grounded, Christmas-themed crime story where Clint Barton, the original Hawkeye, began training Kate Bishop to take over as the new Hawkeye. By the end of the series, Clint appeared to have retired to be with his family, leaving Kate to continue his heroic work.

While it hasn’t been officially announced, Jeremy Renner might return as Clint Barton in Avengers: Doomsday. The complete cast list is still unreleased, leaving the possibility open for Renner, Hailee Steinfeld to reprise her role as Kate Bishop, or even both of them. It’s important to remember that Clint previously trained Kate to potentially take over as Hawkeye.

Ms. Marvel Is A Mutant & Wants To Form A New Team

As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited when 2022’s Ms. Marvel came out! It introduced us to Kamala Khan, and it was awesome seeing a character who was as obsessed with Captain Marvel as I am. The series follows Kamala as she discovers a magical bangle from her grandmother, which gives her incredible light-based powers and turns her into Ms. Marvel. While the show mostly tells its own story, it definitely connects to the wider MCU, especially with what happened in 2023’s The Marvels, where we learned even more about Kamala’s connection to Captain Marvel.

Before the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, it’s important to remember that Kamala Khan, from Ms. Marvel, has been established as a mutant. While she’s an Inhuman in the original Marvel comics, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has made her the first official mutant in their films, connecting her story to the X-Men who will appear in Doomsday.

Kamala was also hoping to create her own team of heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially including Kate Bishop from Hawkeye and Cassie Lang from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This connection to mutants could tie her into the X-Men, or her new team of young heroes could be important in a future battle against Doctor Doom.

Hulk Has A Son

I really enjoyed She-Hulk: Attorney at Law! It was cool seeing another side of the Hulk with Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin. Mark Ruffalo even showed up a few times as Bruce/The Hulk, and there was this one storyline that made me think it could connect to something bigger, maybe even Avengers: Doomsday down the line. It felt pretty separate from everything else, which I appreciated!

The Disney+ series She-Hulk introduced Skaar, the son of Hulk, who was born during Hulk’s time traveling in space between the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok. Skaar arrived on Earth with Hulk at the end of She-Hulk. It’s currently unknown if Skaar will be important in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, but it’s something to keep in mind if Mark Ruffalo returns as Hulk.

Nick Fury Has Been Helping Super-Powered Skrulls Live On Earth

Many fans hoped Secret Invasion would have a bigger impact on the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe, but some of its storylines might continue in Avengers: Doomsday. The show revolved around Nick Fury’s long-standing efforts to help the Skrulls – alien shapeshifters first seen in Captain Marvel – settle on Earth, starting in the 1990s.

In the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, a Skrull named G’iah gained superpowers, becoming a ‘Super-Skrull’ with abilities taken from various Avengers and their associates. While it’s probably not likely we’ll see this version of the Super-Skrull in Avengers: Doomsday, Nick Fury could definitely appear. If he does, Secret Invasion explains what he’s been doing leading up to that event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The MCU’s Potential Young Avengers Members Have Been Introduced

As we’ve seen hints of, Ms. Marvel seems to be putting together a new team of Young Avengers. Several Disney+ shows within the Marvel Cinematic Universe have already introduced characters who could become members, including Kate Bishop from Hawkeye and Skaar from She-Hulk, both of whom have been discussed as possibilities.

In addition to these heroes, we have Wiccan and Speed, also known as Billy and Tommy Maximoff. These twin sons of Wanda Maximoff and Vision first appeared in the WandaVision series. The show revealed that Billy came to life thanks to Wanda’s magic, and the upcoming 2026 film, Vision Quest, will explore how Tommy gained his powers. This could lead to Wiccan and Speed joining the Young Avengers team.

As a Marvel fan, I was so excited to see Eli Bradley show up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! Knowing he’s Isaiah Bradley’s grandson and eventually becomes Patriot in the comics was a great nod to the source material. Then, with Loki giving us a Kid Loki variant, it really feels like Disney+ is setting things up for a Young Avengers team to finally appear in the MCU, and I’m here for it!

Although it’s not yet official, the Young Avengers might be involved in the fight against Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars movies.

Loki Became The God Of The Multiverse

The strongest connection between a Marvel TV show and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday appeared in Loki season 2. In the season, Loki tried to repair something called the Temporal Loom, a safety measure within the TVA. This Loom was built to erase all timelines and the TVA itself if He Who Remains died and the multiverse grew too large.

After facing numerous challenges, Loki decides to repair the Temporal Loom himself. However, he doesn’t actually fix it; instead, he destroys it and takes its place. Therefore, by the end of Loki season 2, Loki has become the god of the multiverse, responsible for maintaining and overseeing its endless realities.

Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as Loki in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The film centers around Doctor Doom’s attack on the multiverse, and Loki will be part of the effort to defend it. He’ll be working to stop Doom’s dangerous schemes throughout the movie.
