Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, remains one of the most famous and well-loved stories ever written. It has been retold many times in movies and on TV, with popular versions including the 1951 film Scrooge, Disney’s 2009 animated movie, and the 1988 comedy Scrooged starring Bill Murray.
Many consider the Muppet Christmas Carol to be the best version of the classic story. Released in 1992, the film stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, who is haunted by ghostly Muppets. Kermit the Frog plays Bob Cratchit, Fozzie Bear is Fozziwig, and the story is narrated by Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat. The movie perfectly combines the Muppets’ signature silly humor with the touching and hopeful message of Scrooge’s transformation at Christmas.
We’ve picked 10 memorable lines from the movie to show you why it’s considered one of the greatest Christmas comedies of all time.

“I told you; storytellers are omniscient. I know everything!”
Gonzo (Charles Dickens)

Disney
Even though A Christmas Carol finishes with a hopeful and uplifting message about forgiveness and second chances, it’s actually a rather somber story, particularly considering it’s a Muppet film. Luckily, Gonzo and Rizzo provide some much-needed humor during the movie’s darker moments.
As a huge film buff, I was surprised and delighted to find out this adaptation of Dickens is narrated by none other than Gonzo and Rizzo! It’s such a fun, unexpected twist on a classic story.
The two characters provide most of the movie’s humor, and their habit of playfully acknowledging they’re in a story is a standout moment. When Rizzo questions how Gonzo knows things he shouldn’t, Gonzo explains he’s the storyteller and sees everything, immediately establishing their funny role in the film: commenting on how stories work.

“It is the American way. … Oh. It is the British way.”
Sam Eagle

Beuna Vista
Sam Eagle, a Muppet famous for being very strict and deeply patriotic, feels completely out of place in ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol.’ The story takes place in Victorian England, which clashes with everything his character stands for.
The film cleverly acknowledges this disconnect when the character jokingly mentions America, then immediately corrects himself. This self-aware moment emphasizes the contrast between his Muppet persona and the historical time period of the story.

“Wait a second! You’re not Charles Dickens!”
Rizzo

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Gonzo narrates the movie as if he is Charles Dickens, the author of the original story. This leads to a funny moment when Rizzo points out that Gonzo is actually a blue Muppet, not the famous Victorian novelist – a classic example of Jim Henson’s Muppets playfully mixing with a traditional Dickensian tale.

“One might say that December is the foreclosure season.”
Scrooge

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution
While full of classic Muppet fun, The Muppet Christmas Carol also offers surprisingly sharp wit. Michael Caine, as Ebenezer Scrooge, delivers the line, “One might say that December is the foreclosure season,” with a completely straight face. This darkly humorous statement reveals Scrooge’s cruel logic: he views December as a chance to make money off others’ misfortune, as people spend on holidays and struggle to pay their bills. It’s a bleakly practical comment that perfectly showcases just how cold and calculating he is.

“I had 1,274 brothers and sisters.”
Rizzo

Beuna Vista
Watching Scrooge revisit his lonely childhood with the Ghost of Christmas Past was genuinely heartbreaking, but I have to admit, Rizzo’s reaction really struck a chord with me. He just couldn’t connect with Scrooge’s experience of being overlooked and abandoned as a kid, and honestly, neither could I at first. It’s a tough scene to watch, seeing that early isolation, and Rizzo’s inability to relate felt surprisingly honest.
When asked to explain further, he jokingly said he grew up with “1,274 brothers and sisters.” He was referring to his rat character and the fact that rats have much larger families than humans. However, being Rizzo, he probably exaggerated the number for comedic effect.
5
“This is culture!”
Gonzo

Beuna Vista
There’s a funny, self-aware moment when Rizzo worries the story is getting too frightening for younger viewers during a particularly intense scene. Gonzo quickly responds, “It’s all right. This is culture,” playfully acknowledging the story’s status as a famous and respected work of literature.
4
“And I am here for the food.”
Rizzo

Disney
Rizzo and Gonzo are one of the most memorable pairs in The Muppets, known for always supporting each other and having a great sense of humor. The Muppet Christmas Carol does a wonderful job of showing exactly what makes their friendship so special and unique.
Standing at an apple stand, the practical Gonzo announces he’s going to tell everyone what’s happening, while Rizzo chimes in with a joke about just being there for the snacks.
3
“I’m a large absent-minded spirit!”
Ghost of Christmas Present

Beuna Vista
When the vibrant Ghost of Christmas Present appears, Scrooge quickly notices its playful, childlike personality – almost like a Muppet. Scrooge jokingly calls the Ghost “a little absent-minded,” and the Ghost playfully responds that it’s actually “a large absent-minded spirit.” This lighthearted exchange highlights how small, simple moments can bring the most joy.
2
“This is my island in the sun…”
Rats

Beuna Vista
The scene unfolds in Scrooge’s chilly office, where he keeps the heating low to save money. His rat bookkeepers aren’t happy about the cold and playfully complain with clever puns like, “Our pens have turned to inkcicles!” and “Our assets are frozen!”
Scrooge angrily warns the rats they’ll be fired if they keep complaining. In a surprising act of rebellion, the rats immediately change into Hawaiian outfits—grass skirts and headdresses—and burst into a lively song and dance about a tropical paradise as they scamper away.
1
“Light the lamp, not the rat!”
Rizzo

Beuna Vista
In a chaotic and funny moment, Gonzo, playing the role of Dickens, tries to light a Victorian streetlamp to create a gloomy winter atmosphere. However, he accidentally sets Rizzo the Rat’s tail on fire! Rizzo yells, “Light the lamp, not the rat!” as he briefly bursts into flames before quickly putting himself out by falling into a snowbank. The scene is so unexpected and silly, it feels completely unscripted – a perfect example of classic Muppet mayhem.
