Nintendo and Illumination are carefully developing a Super Smash Bros. movie, even though they’ve already started building a movie universe with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film successfully brought popular characters from the fighting games – like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and Donkey Kong – to the big screen.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has expanded the number of characters from the Super Smash Bros. series appearing in Nintendo’s interconnected stories. The film prominently features Yoshi, Rosalina, Bowser Jr., and Fox McCloud, and also includes quick appearances by characters like Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B., Little Mac, and Falco Lombardi.
Despite the growing number of characters in the animated movies, many iconic fighters from the Smash Bros. games haven’t made an appearance yet. With 89 fighters across all the games, the movies have only included a small fraction of them.
The Super Mario movies have actually featured many characters who later appeared in the Smash Bros. series, going all the way back to its beginnings. Besides the main characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Yoshi, and Mr. Game & Watch – who are in almost every Smash Bros. game – there have also been hidden references to characters like Samus Aran, Captain Falcon, and the Ice Climbers.
Despite Nintendo’s reluctance to confirm a Smash Bros. movie, there are still many popular characters not yet included in their cinematic universe.
Link
As a huge Smash Bros. fan, one of my biggest wishes is to see Link finally join the roster! He’s been a core part of Nintendo for so long, showing up in every single Smash game so far. And it’s not just the classic Link either – we’ve also gotten Toon Link and Young Link, showing how popular the character is. It feels like it’s only a matter of time, but I’m still hoping!
Toon Link has appeared in every Super Smash Bros. game starting with Brawl. Young Link first showed up in Melee, but wasn’t in the following two games before returning in Ultimate.
Although Link isn’t in the Super Mario movies made by Illumination, he’s getting his own live-action movie, The Legend of Zelda, planned for 2027, a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony. Since The Super Mario Galaxy Movie introduced the idea of a multiverse, there’s a possibility that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who will play Link, could appear in a future movie based on Smash Bros.
Pikachu
Pikachu, arguably the most famous Pokémon, hasn’t yet officially joined Nintendo’s live-action universe. Although Legendary and Warner Bros. created a live-action Detective Pikachu movie in 2019, Ryan Reynolds’ take on the electric Pokémon isn’t currently connected to that series.
Pikachu, the face of the Pokémon series, has been in every Super Smash Bros. game so far. Both Melee and Ultimate let you play as Pichu, Pikachu’s younger form. Unless there are issues with movie rights, it’s highly likely Pikachu will appear in a Smash Bros. movie as well.
Ness
Ness, the main character from Mother/Earthbound, is a long-time fighter in the Smash Bros. series. He’s been a playable character since the very first Super Smash Bros. game on Nintendo 64, using his psychic powers and trusty baseball bat in every installment.
Currently, Ness isn’t scheduled to appear in any upcoming Nintendo movies. However, future films could potentially introduce him, perhaps as another human character from the same world as Mario and Luigi, without needing to involve complex multiverse storylines.
Kirby
Kirby, Nintendo’s adorable pink puffball, is a hugely popular character that a potential Smash Bros. movie still needs to feature. He’s appeared in every game in the series and is a mainstay of Nintendo’s success, so it would be surprising if he didn’t make an appearance on the big screen soon.
Even though The Super Mario Galaxy Movie briefly includes a nod to Kirby, it doesn’t prove that his home world, Dream Land, is part of the movie’s universe. However, the film establishes a vast galaxy full of possibilities, which could open the door for Kirby to appear in a future Super Mario movie or even get his own adventure, potentially leading to a big crossover between the two franchises.
Jigglypuff
Jigglypuff, the adorable pink Pokémon known for singing lullabies, has been a fan favorite for decades. It’s no surprise it’s been part of the Super Smash Bros. series since the very start. While Jigglypuff appeared in the Detective Pikachu movie, it’s currently unclear if that story is officially part of the main Pokémon universe.
If a Smash Bros. movie ever happens, most fans would anticipate seeing Jigglypuff. The character has a strong connection to the games and is very popular, so leaving Jigglypuff out would likely disappoint a lot of people.
Mewtwo
Like many Pokémon, Mewtwo is a prominent character in the Smash Bros. series. This powerful Legendary Pokémon first appeared in Melee, was absent from Brawl, made a return as downloadable content for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and is fully featured in Ultimate.
Just like with other Pokémon, Mewtwo’s appearance in Detective Pikachu likely won’t affect whether or not he’s included in Super Smash Bros. Nintendo will decide if and when to add a new version of Mewtwo to Smash Bros., regardless of his role in the movie.
Zelda
Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda is a well-known Nintendo character that fans have wanted to see in the Smash Bros. series for a long time. While she wasn’t in the very first Smash Bros. game, she was added in Melee and has been a playable character in every game since.
The game Melee let players control Sheik, Zelda’s ninja disguise. Sheik has appeared in other games too, meaning the Zelda series offers players two ways to play as Hyrule’s princess in battles.
I’m so excited! While Zelda didn’t appear in the Super Mario movies, it sounds like she’s finally getting her moment with a live-action Legend of Zelda film coming out next year, and Bo Bragason will be playing her! I’m really hoping this means we might see characters from Zelda, Mario, and even Smash Bros. all together on the big screen someday – maybe even as a cartoon version of the brawl! If that happens, 2027 could be a huge year for fans like me.
Ganondorf
Ganondorf, the main villain from The Legend of Zelda, has been a playable character in Super Smash Bros. since the Melee installment. His powerful magic makes him a strong fighter, and he could appear in a Smash Bros. movie as a major villain or even be forced to work with his enemies.
It’s still unknown whether Ganondorf will appear in the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, and if he’ll be part of Nintendo’s future movie plans. Although Ganon is a popular character in Smash Bros., the story might not require him in the first film.
Marth
Marth is a veteran character in the Smash Bros. series. He was one of the first fighters from the Fire Emblem games, appearing alongside Roy in Melee. While Roy wasn’t included in Brawl and only became downloadable content in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Marth has been a consistent presence in every Smash Bros. game released since Melee.
As much as I’d love to see a full-blown Fire Emblem movie, it doesn’t seem to be in the works right now. But hey, I’m still holding out hope that characters like Marth could pop up in a Smash Bros. movie someday! It makes sense, considering how many different franchises are involved. Honestly, they might be saving some characters for a potential second crossover event just to avoid overcrowding things, which is a smart move.
Pit
It’s also worth noting that Pit, the main character from Kid Icarus, hasn’t appeared yet. He joined Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a member of Palutena’s army, but so far, The Super Mario Bros. Movie hasn’t hinted at his existence or formally introduced him to the movie universe.
There’s a fun connection to the character Pit from Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie. As an Easter egg in the film, Mario is shown playing the original Kid Icarus video game. If Pit were ever included in a Smash Bros. movie, it would be a surprising encounter for Mario, who has actually played as him in a game!
