10 Best Shows Like Schitt’s Creek

It’s amazing how consistently funny and relatable Schitt’s Creek remains, even though it originally aired over eleven years ago. Many episodes quickly became fan favorites, and moments like David’s exasperated “Ew, David!” and his clever use of a wine analogy to come out have become iconic parts of pop culture.

Each character in Schitt’s Creek—from the unforgettable Moira Rose to the lovable Patrick—is uniquely memorable. But beyond the individual personalities, the show is truly special because it feels so warm and comforting. While there’s nothing quite like Schitt’s Creek, other shows can evoke a similar feeling.

Arrested Development

2003-2006, 2016-2019

Early on, Arrested Development was often compared to Schitt’s Creek because both shows feature a wealthy, eccentric family unexpectedly forced to adjust to a simpler lifestyle. While the Bluth family has moments of genuine warmth, particularly through Michael, who consistently supports his more chaotic relatives, Arrested Development generally has a more sarcastic and pessimistic tone.

If you loved Schitt’s Creek and are looking for something a bit edgier, Arrested Development is a great choice. It tackles controversial topics like forbidden attraction and complicated family dynamics – including a problematic adoption – without holding back. Unlike Schitt’s Creek, which explains its characters’ misfortune with external factors, Arrested Development fully embraces the flawed and often immoral behavior of its central figure, George Bluth.

Despite sharing elements with other comedies, Arrested Development is a truly iconic show, famous for its incredibly funny lines, many of which are hilarious even when you don’t know the context – like the memorable quote, “It’s one banana, Michael. How much could it cost? Ten dollars?”

Grace And Frankie

2015-2022

I honestly think Grace and Frankie is one of Netflix’s best, and it really deserves more recognition. The story of those ex-husbands falling in love is surprisingly touching, but the show is truly about Grace and Frankie themselves. Grace, played by Jane Fonda, reminds me a little of Moira from Schitt’s Creek with her dry wit, and I just love how wonderfully messy and relatable their whole family is. It’s a fantastic show!

What sets Grace and Frankie apart is its focus on multiple generations and its portrayal of a very unusual family. While the romance between Robert and Sol gets a lot of attention, the show is truly about the unexpected friendship between Grace and Frankie, and how both of their lives change dramatically after years of being settled.

Bob’s Burgers

2011-Present

In a landscape often filled with edgy content, Bob’s Burgers stands out as a genuinely heartwarming show. It beautifully blends the nostalgic joy of childhood with the realistic struggles of making ends meet, all while showcasing a family with a deep and authentic love for one another. Bob is a wonderfully kind and dedicated father, and the entire Belcher family consistently supports each other through thick and thin.

Despite all the heartwarming moments, the show is still genuinely funny, with humor that’s both down-to-earth and delightfully silly. Louise frequently leads her siblings into playful trouble that feels very important to them, and Bob often resorts to goofy antics, like pretending to be trapped inside the house, to avoid awkward situations with his in-laws.

Frasier

1993-2004

Considered one of the greatest family sitcoms ever, Frasier brilliantly explored the humor in relationships between adult children and their parents. While Frasier is the titular character, his brother Niles is arguably the show’s comedic standout, sharing a lot of personality traits with David Rose. Niles is incredibly refined and concerned with social status, but throughout the series, he unexpectedly becomes the character audiences connect with most emotionally.

Their dad, Martin, constantly challenges his anxious psychologist sons, often poking fun at their difficulty relating to ordinary people. This leads to hilarious moments, like when Niles exclaimed, “I specifically asked for a hint of cinnamon, and he gave me a massive dose!”

Hacks

2021-Present

Few shows capture the beauty of unlikely friendships and personal growth quite like Hacks. The show is hilarious as Ava and Deborah constantly clash, but their connection goes deeper than just comedy. Deborah’s strong work ethic and determined spirit, particularly in season 4 of Hacks, strongly resembled Johnny Rose, and she really embraced his attitude.

Honestly, one of the most powerful scenes this season was when Deborah walked away from her dream job on live TV. She just completely called out the network for all their questionable decisions, and it really hit me. It reminded me so much of that incredible moment in Schitt’s Creek when Johnny Rose finally lost it and publicly defended Schitt’s Creek and the people who lived there – that same raw emotion and willingness to stand up for what’s right. It was just a really strong parallel.

Gilmore Girls

2000-2007

When it comes to warm, small-town vibes, it’s hard to beat Gilmore Girls. The residents of Stars Hollow are just as unique and endearing as those in Schitt’s Creek. Characters like the chatty Babette, the rule-following Taylor, the eccentric Kirk, and the grumpy but lovable Luke all contribute to the town’s special atmosphere.

Like Schitt’s Creek, Gilmore Girls offers a fresh perspective on wealth by portraying the cozy town of Stars Hollow as a place where money isn’t a priority. Lorelai and Rory occasionally get a taste of high society when visiting Lorelai’s wealthy parents, but Lorelai deliberately chooses to be independent and provide for herself and Rory without relying on their privileged lifestyle.

Abbott Elementary

2021-Present

I’ve noticed something really interesting about Abbott Elementary – it reminds me a lot of Schitt’s Creek! It’s amazing how Quinta Brunson is both the creative force behind the show and a star in it, just like Dan and Eugene Levy did with Schitt’s Creek. And honestly, watching Abbott is just heartwarming. You see these teachers constantly going above and beyond for their students, even when it means sacrificing their own time and money – it’s so genuine and lovely.

The show’s style of presenting itself as a real documentary adds a sarcastic humor to the comedy. It allows characters to express things – things they couldn’t say around kids or on regular TV – with just a look at the camera.

Ted Lasso

2020-2023

Known for its feel-good vibes, Ted Lasso surprisingly avoids being overly sentimental. The show’s excellent cast and their relatable struggles keep it realistic, while also preventing it from becoming too depressing. Ultimately, Ted Lasso is a show about a charming soccer team, so it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

As a total cinema and TV devotee, I have to say that Ted Lasso is exactly what you need after finishing a heartwarming show like Schitt’s Creek. It’s just such a feel-good experience watching Ted guide his team – and even himself – through life’s ups and downs, both on and off the field. It’s the perfect pick-me-up!

Modern Family

2009-2020

The title Modern Family is perfect for this show. It beautifully portrays the many different relationships within one family, all built on a foundation of love. Whether it’s Mitch and Cam becoming parents or Jay’s deep affection for Manny, Modern Family highlights a quiet, unconditional acceptance, much like what you see in Schitt’s Creek.

What makes Modern Family so good is its large cast. Having so many characters naturally leads to more funny, chaotic situations, and heartwarming moments. Like Schitt’s Creek, the show is also delightfully quirky, especially through characters like Phil, who is a uniquely lovable and goofy ‘traditional’ guy.

Somebody Somewhere

2022-2024

The show Somebody Somewhere shares similarities with Schitt’s Creek, but focuses on characters who haven’t had wealth. Like Schitt’s Creek, it uses scenic shots of ordinary landscapes. However, Somebody Somewhere‘s more down-to-earth characters give it a more somber tone. While Schitt’s Creek often makes you cry from happiness, Somebody Somewhere isn’t afraid to evoke all kinds of emotions, bringing tears of every sort.

Somebody Somewhere explores difficult topics like grief, self-doubt, and tough times through the story of Sam and Joel’s unexpected bond and the people around them in Kansas. Despite honestly portraying these struggles, the show always finds its way back to a heartwarming sense of love and community, much like Schitt’s Creek, reminding us how important those connections are.
