The Nintendo Switch 2 features better technology, exciting new games, and enhanced versions of popular titles. However, games on the new system now cost more. This price increase has frustrated some fans and means each game feels like a bigger commitment – and a greater letdown if it doesn’t live up to expectations.
The Nintendo Switch 2 offers a solution with plenty of free-to-play games. These games are downloadable and playable at no cost, though many offer optional in-game purchases. Currently, there are almost 20 free games available for the Switch 2, and some of the best ones don’t require you to spend any money at all.
Warframe Is A Sci-Fi Robot Ninja Action Fest
A Dedicated Switch 2 Version Is In Development
In the sci-fi action game Warframe, developed by Digital Extremes, you fight to save humanity. You’ll battle enemies, collect loot, and play as a powerful, customizable mechanical ninja. With over 70 different Warframes available – and more constantly being added – you can really tailor the game to your own style.
Warframe launched on Nintendo Switch in 2018 and can still be played for free on the new Switch 2 console. A version specifically designed for the Switch 2 is also being created and is expected to be released in 2026.
Disney Speedstorm Is A Must-Play For Disney And Pixar Fans
Race Through Tracks Inspired By Your Favorite Franchises
While Disney Dreamlight Valley often steals the show, Disney Speedster is a great choice for anyone who loves Disney and racing games. This free-to-play game lets you race as and against beloved Disney characters on tracks based on popular Disney and Pixar worlds.
In July, the game was updated for the Switch 2, significantly improving its performance. It now runs at a smooth 60 frames per second (compared to the previous 30), with graphics up to 1080p when played handheld and up to 1440p when docked. These updates also included several visual enhancements, making the game look and play exceptionally well on the new console.
Super Kirby Clash Is Silly Fun In Local Co-Op
Customize The Perfect Kirby For You
Join forces with up to three friends to battle Kirby’s foes and bosses! Each player gets to create a unique Kirby character tailored to how they like to play – you can be a close-combat fighter like the Sword Hero, or support the team from a distance as Doctor Healmore.
The game first came out in 2019 and hasn’t been updated to take advantage of the new Switch 2 console. However, players report that it still performs well on the Switch 2, despite having occasional minor glitches.
Okay, so Super Kirby Clash is a bit older now, which means you don’t see a ton of people playing online anymore. But honestly, it’s still super fun! If you’ve got some friends who can play with you locally, it’s totally worth picking up and getting into.
Palia Is A Cozy MMO With A Collaborative Spirit
Sit Back, Relax, And Make Some Friends
Palia is a relaxing online game focused on building a friendly community. You’ll explore a beautiful fantasy world, make friends and even find romance with the characters you meet, and create a cozy home and garden all your own.
Working together is a central part of Palia, a free-to-play game. While Switch players might find typing messages a little slower than those on PC, the game is otherwise just as visually stunning and charming on the Switch 2 as it is on other consoles. Plus, you can play with friends on any platform!
Pokémon Café Remix Is A Casual Matching Game
The Perfect Choice For Downtime
If you’re looking for a relaxing and easy game to play on your Switch 2, Pokémon Café Remix is a great option. It’s a free game that feels more like a mobile app, featuring a simple matching game combined with cute Pokémon characters.
Run a lively café and hire adorable Pokémon to assist you! Remix is an updated version of the original game from 2021. It improves many of the frustrating parts of the first game and includes brand new ways to play and exciting features.
The Elder Scrolls: Blades Lets You Travel To A New Elder Scrolls World
Set Between Oblivion And Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls: Blades takes place in the same universe as games like Oblivion and Skyrim, fitting into the timeline between those two adventures. What’s new is that this game is free to play!
Blades offers a fresh story within the familiar framework of a classic dungeon crawler, featuring the beautiful environments and detailed narratives players expect from Bethesda. However, the game received criticism at launch due to its focus on small in-app purchases and a repetitive leveling process.
Even though it has some drawbacks, Blades is a free game that’s perfect to play if you’re eagerly anticipating The Elder Scrolls 6.
Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium Beings Back Classic Arcade Games
One Title Is Completely Free To Play
Relive the golden age of arcades with Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, bringing beloved classic Capcom arcade games to the Switch 2.
Okay, so unlike most of the games I’ve been checking out, 2nd Stadium isn’t totally free. You do get one game free – it’s called SonSon, a classic side-scrolling fighter based on the story Journey to the West. But if you want any of the other arcade games they have – and there are a bunch of Street Fighter titles – you’ll need to buy them individually, and they’re usually around a dollar or two each.
Sky: Children Of The Light Is A Beautiful Game About Community
A Spiritual Successor To 2013’s Journey
If you enjoyed Journey by Thatgamecompany, you’ll likely feel right at home with Sky: Children of the Light. It’s made by the same creators and builds on many of the same ideas. The game lets you explore seven stunning worlds, discover the story behind them, and connect with other players.
Similar to the game Journey, connecting with other players through music is just as crucial as discovering the game world. While the game is free to play, its optional purchases are unique. Instead of benefiting only yourself, you can buy items and give them as gifts to other players, encouraging a supportive community. These purchases aren’t required at all.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel Is A Good Intro To The Franchise
Play Solo Or Against Others Around The World
If you’re new to Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is an excellent game to learn with. It’s free to play and includes a Solo Mode that walks you through the rules with an engaging story.
When you’re ready, you can begin playing against other players in both duels and championships, all while customizing your deck and developing your unique way of playing. The game is said to run exceptionally well on the Switch 2, even though it hasn’t received any specific updates for the new console.
Rocket League Lets You Play Soccer With Cars
Unleash Vehicular Chaos On The Soccer Field
I remember when Rocket League first came out in 2015, you actually had to buy it. Then in 2020, they made it free-to-play, which was awesome! It’s a multiplayer game where cars play soccer – I know, it sounds crazy, but trust me, it’s surprisingly fun and really works!
The game is exciting, moves quickly, and can be pretty chaotic. While it’s unclear if it will be specifically updated for the next Nintendo Switch, you can currently play it on the newest Switch console using backwards compatibility.
