1 of the Most Perfect Superhero Movies, Spider-Man 2, Is Swinging Up the Charts 22 Years Later

It’s March 11, 2026, and fans are getting impatient! Still no trailer has been released for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth movie starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, and the beginning of a new trilogy. As a result, many are hoping for another appearance by Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.

The original Spider-Man trilogy was highly successful, leading to two Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield and the current series starring Tom Holland. Many consider it the strongest of the three Spider-Man cinematic universes.

It’s probably no surprise that, despite all the current excitement about the new Spider-Man stories, it’s actually the older movie, Spider-Man 2 starring Tobey Maguire, that’s becoming popular again. It recently reached number 7 on HBO Max in the US.

Why Spider-Man 2 Is One Of the Best Superhero Movies … Ever

Following the success of the 2002 film Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire returned as the iconic hero in Spider-Man 2 just two years later. That sequel is now considered one of the greatest superhero movies of all time.

The sequel to Spider-Man wisely kept its talented cast, including Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, J.K. Simmons, and the brilliant Willem Dafoe, who played a chilling version of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. It then added Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius, creating an even more challenging situation for Peter Parker.

What truly makes this film stand out is that it’s more than just another superhero action movie. In Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker struggles with incredibly difficult and complex emotional choices, something rarely seen in any film. These struggles deeply affect him, weakening his powers and ultimately leading him to abandon his life as Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 2 Had Great Power, Great Responsibility

Peter Parker continues to struggle with the loss of Uncle Ben, and he openly admits to feeling responsible in a tearful conversation with Aunt May. Meanwhile, he’s haunted by the death of Norman Osborn, as his best friend, Harry, believes Spider-Man was to blame. Harry doesn’t realize (at first) that Peter Parker is the very hero he despises, but eventually, he discovers the truth when he unmasks Peter.

Harry starts experiencing visions of Norman Osborn ordering him to kill Peter Parker. When Harry refuses, a mirror breaks, revealing a secret room containing the Green Goblin’s costume. This sets up Harry to become the new Green Goblin in Spider-Man 3.

Parker is juggling a lot: he’s trying to rescue both the city and Mary Jane Watson, all while also attempting to free Doc Ock from the artificial intelligence that’s controlling him. It’s a truly impressive performance, and Tobey Maguire embodies the role so perfectly that even Tom Hiddleston, known for playing Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, couldn’t match it – and that’s saying something, even though director Sam Raimi insists a team-up won’t happen.

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy is also currently streaming on Disney+.
