Attuma’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday might hint at what’s happening with Namor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Namor didn’t have a large part in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, actor Alex Livinalli is returning as the Talokanil warrior for the upcoming Avengers film, which could be significant.

The addition of both him and Namora introduces well-known characters from Namor’s world, likely in anticipation of the main heroes of Avengers: Doomsday – or Doctor Doom – needing assistance from Talokan. While it’s reasonable to expect Namora and Attuma to play similar roles as they did in their first appearance, they could also be involved in a larger, unexpected plot twist – possibly both of them.

Attuma Is Namor’s Biggest Villain In Marvel Comics

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Attuma is shown as a friend and ally to Namor. However, this is quite different from the comics, where they are actually long-time enemies and have battled each other repeatedly. In the original stories, Attuma isn’t a follower of Namor – he’s his biggest rival.

Attuma first appeared in a 1964 issue of Fantastic Four and leads a group of Atlanteans who live separately from Namor’s kingdom. He’s always wanted to lead his people to Atlantis and take over the throne, leading to many conflicts with Namor, usually centered around control of the underwater city.

During the 2011 Marvel event “Fear Itself,” Attuma finally achieved his goal and briefly ruled Atlantis as its king.

Attuma’s MCU Role Supports The Idea That Namor Could Lose Control Of Talokan

Considering Attuma’s background in the comics, the way he was portrayed in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a significant departure. The differences are so noticeable that it raises the question of why Marvel Studios chose Attuma for the role he plays in the movie.

A likely reason for introducing Attuma is to set up a future storyline. Having a major Namor enemy so close to the Sub-Mariner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opens the door to a potential betrayal and a power shift. This twist would make Attuma a more faithful adaptation of the comic book villain and explain why he was included in Wakanda Forever.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Namor were overthrown in Talokan. The seeds for this were planted in Wakanda Forever, when Namora voiced her disagreement with Namor’s deal with Shuri. This strongly suggested that Talokan would face political turmoil, potentially leading to someone plotting against him.

The ending of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever might suggest Namora will play a key role, but Attuma is a more likely candidate to become a villain. In the comics, Attuma always prioritizes strength, so it’s believable that a Marvel Cinematic Universe version would view Namor as a weak leader after his defeat and withdrawal, potentially leading to betrayal.

Attuma taking over from Namor – or even assisting Namora in removing him from power – might happen before Doctor Doom becomes a major threat in Avengers: Doomsday. Alternatively, it could be the last piece of a larger conflict that began in Wakanda Forever. Attuma might be motivated to act by helping the Avengers or Shuri, ultimately leading to a conflict similar to what’s seen in the comics.
