Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Virgin River season 7.
Although the latest season of the popular Netflix series Virgin River just came out, news has already surfaced that two key actors won’t be returning for season 8.
Season 7 of Virgin River follows Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) as they navigate married life and the possibility of becoming parents. A worried pregnant woman asks them to adopt her baby. Meanwhile, Lizzy (Sarah Dugdale) and Denny (Kai Bradbury) get ready to welcome their own child, and Muriel (Teryl Rothery) continues to battle cancer. The season also unravels the mystery of Charmaine’s (Lauren Hammersley) disappearance from the previous season.
A recent clip from Virgin River season 7 suggests Charmaine might be connected to Calvin’s death. As Detective Mike Valenzuela investigates, it appears this case will resolve the storylines for both Mike and Charmaine – though not permanently. According to Deadline, actors Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley, who play Mike and Charmaine respectively, won’t be returning for season 8.
Honestly, after everything Charmaine went through in season 7, I totally get why she needs to get away from Virgin River and all the painful memories. And it was a bit sad to see Mike and Brie’s relationship fall apart, even though they were trying to help find Charmaine. Brie just keeps getting drawn back to Brady, and things with him end on a really dramatic note in the season finale – a total cliffhanger! It leaves you wanting more, but also a little worried.
Despite their recent departures, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith has hinted that both characters could reappear in later seasons of Virgin River. The show has been officially renewed for a tenth-episode eighth season, set to premiere in July 2025. According to Deadline, most of the main cast from season seven, including Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Annette Hollingsworth, Grayson Allen, Colin Lawrence (as Preacher), Tim Matheson (as Doc), Annette O’Toole (as Hope McCrea), and Sarah Dugdale (as Lizzie), are expected to return for season eight.
When asked about changes to the cast, Smith explained that they’re focused on the show’s future and ensuring the remaining characters have enough compelling storylines to sustain it for the long term.
According to showrunner Smith, Mike’s new romance in Virgin River season 7 means his storyline will likely take a backseat for a bit, until the writers develop a compelling arc for him.
With so many existing character connections, bringing Mike back to Victoria felt like a natural conclusion to that storyline. I really enjoy the character of Marco, though, and I’d be excited to see him return in a bigger capacity if the writers find a compelling way to do so.
I have to say, I’ve always felt for Charmaine. Ever since she showed up in Virgin River, she’s really taken a lot of heat! It’s been tough watching her navigate a complicated pregnancy that’s stretched on for seasons, plus dealing with her constant dishonesty and, honestly, a really frightening relationship with the father of her baby. It’s been a lot for one person, and the actress, Lauren Hammersley, has really brought all of that to life, according to what the show’s creator, Jack Smith, has said.
There aren’t currently any plans for Charmaine to return in season 8. However, I’d be open to bringing the character back in the future, but only if we can move beyond storylines focused on dramatic cliffhangers and false pregnancy claims.
Now that Charmaine is no longer a central figure, any character could be at the heart of the most exciting story in Virgin River’s next season.
All episodes of Virgin River season 7 are now streaming, only on Netflix.
